Agree 100%. I wonder if any forum member has first hand experience with any issue caused by metal shavings ever. Manufacturing processes have come a long long way. The pistons, rings and cylinder bores are closely managed for emissions. Chunks of metal large enough to cause problems would happen immediately (at low mileage) which would mean warranty costs for the manufacturer plus potential damage to the brand image.Everyone do what best for them on oil change. Steering other on nonsense is crazy.
Break in oil is old school from back before full synthetic became the accepted norm. People can maintain their vehicles how they choose to but to say that new engines or even remanufactured engines don't produce wear metal shavings & debris is a far stretch. Every new or reman engine will produce shavings early in its life. If that doesn't bother someone then let it circulate throughout the engine passages & turbos but understand that it isn't helping to extend the engine & turbos lives. The idea of changing your oil at 500 or 1K to remove any shavings is old school thinking. As a few have said, manufacturing tech and oil viscosity has come a very long way. Many manufacturers actually do put in a break-in oil from the factory that is meant to stay in there. Don't get cute or think you're smarter than the engineers who design and build these things. Just follow the manual and save yourself time and money. Not that complicated.
To each their own, but if you just follow the engineer's recommendations, you'll be fine. Never said they don't produce shavings, just said the tech has become very advanced to wear the shavings don't matter. The engine blocks can take it. Don't overthink it.Break in oil is old school from back before full synthetic became the accepted norm. Personally I'd rather get the break in shavings out early & often by draining & refilling with better quality oil with better add packs to continue the break in process & longevity of the vehicle.
Technically not. as explained to me:You get 5 tire rotations and 2 oil changes, not sure if you can take your 2 free oil changes at any time though ?
That's actually a sound plan because you know a recall is coming...those are standard for all OEMs these days.It seems to vary by dealer. Some will do at any interval you want, some not.
I'm just going to wait til I bring my 4runner in for the first recall repair (statistically for a new model, the 1st recall should be this year some time) and get the oil changed then ;o)
My dealer told me that I need to stick to the ToyotaCare plan if I want to take advantage of the free tire rotations and oil changes. I asked if I could cash in my free oil changes early and he said no. I also asked if I got an early oil change by myself if I would still be eligible for the ToyotaCare freebies and he said no, deviating from ToyotaCare would kick me off the program. I don't know how they would know if I did one myself, if they're checking serial numbers on oil filters or something. There's a guy on here that changed his oil at 1000 miles and sent it off for analysis. I'm at 500 miles on mine and following that thread to see what the analysis says.It seems to vary by dealer. Your dealer sounds like he's pulling stuff out of his ass. Paying for your own oil changes earlier than dealer spec will void out Toyota care?
