I second that. Dealers in general are completely misinformed or not informed.

you can change your own oils, use a third party (non-Toyota) and maintain your warranty. I believe there is a consumer law protecting you on this.
Absolutely call Toyota and file a complaint. These guys meed to be held accountable for the BS they hand out

My dealer told me that I need to stick to the ToyotaCare plan if I want to take advantage of the free tire rotations and oil changes. I asked if I could cash in my free oil changes early and he said no. I also asked if I got an early oil change by myself if I would still be eligible for the ToyotaCare freebies and he said no, deviating from ToyotaCare would kick me off the program. I don't know how they would know if I did one myself, if they're checking serial numbers on oil filters or something. There's a guy on here that changed his oil at 1000 miles and sent it off for analysis. I'm at 500 miles on mine and following that thread to see what the analysis says.

First time hearing this BS, go to another dealer please.

I work at a dealer as a warranty admin btw. (not Toyota)

I have the every 5K oil/rotation setup as well. Went in to have tires swapped(285ko3 E rating was terrible for our use of the 6G) 2 weeks ago at 2300 miles and I wanted to do an oil change as well. They told me they’d charge me as we hadn’t hit 5K miles yet. I said no and will do it at 5K. I’ll adhere to the agreement because that’s what i signed for

I just brought my rig in for its first oil change 1,060 miles. The service rep asked if I was informed my first oil change wasn't until 10,000 miles and that this oil change was unnecessary. I told him actually I was told it was 5k miles, but I would like the oil changed regardless. He reiterated multiple times that my rig did not need an oil change., but eventually did take my 4R back to change the oil. Did any of you get flack from your dealer service rep regarding your 500-1k oil change?

Yes, my dealer said the same thing but when I insisted they said I could use the 10k oil change (to get it for free) or pay for the first one myself, which I did.

Oiy. I paid for some program where I get 5 oil changes/year for 2 years, so this one was no charge. After reading through all 3 pages of posts, it looks like 10K is the standard schtik. Wtf drives their rig 50K miles a year? I'll be lucky if I get 4 oil changes on this 2 year program.

That's how they make profit off the program.

Excellent video from Lake Speed Jr., the Motor Oil Geek. He explains why EARLY oil changes are crucially important. (He worked with Mobil1 to help formulate the break-in oils for Joe Gibbs Racing. This team is sponsored by Toyota.)

I did my first change last Sunday at 725 miles. I plan on doing next at 2k then 5k and then every 3,500-5k going forward. Oil and filters are cheap and it is such an easy change.

I stopped by my local dealer, not where I bought it, to inquire about Toyota Care. I was told 5k intervals with 10k oil changes for 2 years. I asked about using up the "free" oil changes for the first two, 5k and 10k, and was told no. They charge $100 for an oil change so I will mostly pay out of pocket at the 5k and 15k intervals. Since I will already be there, wasting time waiting, might as well pay them to do it. How much more time would it add to the job? After two years, I'll DIY all the maintenance like I've done with all my previous cars.

From a warranty reimbursement point of view, I get it why most dealers do not want to deviate. If they charge us $100 for an oil change, Toyota probably pays them $50 or less. It's not worth the extra paperwork.

I'm planning on doing a 1k oil change myself, coming up shortly. I regret not doing this with the first turbo engine car I ever owned (wife's Chevy Trax). The turbo died just before the factory powertrain warranty expired and was fully covered - lucky me. I also stuck to the engine computer's recommended oil changes, typically in the 7-8k range. I learned my lesson on that car. Personally, I think 10k oil changes on a small turbo engine will backfire. Only time will tell. Maybe Toyota turbos are better than GM's?

Does the dealership use full synthetic for the oil change or do you have to request to use full synthetic? I’m almost at the 1000km mark for my first oil change.

I was wondering the same thing. I want to bring mine in for it's first change and wondering what people recommend using from day 1?

surprising what you can read in the manual

“Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” is used in your Toyota vehicle. Use Toyota approved “Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” or equivalent to satisfy the following grade and viscosity.

Oil grade: ILSAC GF-6A multigrade engine oil

Recommended viscosity: SAE 0W-20
