I dumped my factory fill at 850mi.

Oil looked ok, typical even.

Replaced with OEM Toyota N1 filter and 6qts of Mobil 1 0w-20 ESP x2
What is ESP?

Someone on here or one of the Facebook groups changed all of the fluids. It seems like overkill, but who knows? I had my oil changed at just over 1,000 at a local shop that I use all the time. I’ll have him change again at the 3k mark. We’ll see if the dealership wants to touch it at 5k. The manual does say to change at least every six months, and that should be about 5k for me anyway.

Genuine Toyota OEM 0W-20 (co-developed with Mobil 1) seems to have the highest reported viscosity index (higher is better). I'd use it and save money. Not of these would cause any problems with your engine or performance.

It was pretty cheap at Walmart; iirc it was $27 for the 5qt jug and $8.50 for the 1qt.

$7 for the filter and drain plug gasket brings the total to $40.

Much cheaper than the 7qts + $15 Mann filter I bought for my erstwhile 340i.

The ESP x2 is serious stuff, comprising of 75% GTL and 25% PAO - in addition to meeting stringent specs like MB 229.71.

Euros have been doing turbo engines with thin viscosity for about a decade now, they probably know a thing or two.

When my warranty is up I plan on going to Pennzoil 0w-30 LX or maybe the M1 ESP 0w-30.

After changing oil what is your oil pressure reading showing at idle? Mine is showing between the middle line or slightly above it.

I had intended to post my next results at the 5K oil change, which ended up being 8,700 cause I had some travel. I took it to Round Rock Toyota and just had them perform the 10K service.

I provided them with a 3 ounce sample container and told them I wanted a sample. Well after signing off the completion form, they said the sample was in my cup holder in the truck. When I looked at it, there was barely a teaspoon of oil in there. Nowhere near enough for a sample. That really pissed me off.

Also they checked the tire pressure and forgot to put 3 out of 4 valve stem caps back on.

I've got some other issues and annoyances with the truck but won't be taking it back there. I will go back to Cedar Park and hope they are less sloppy.

The oil appeared to be wearing well though. I will send out my next sample and attach the results to this thread.

Thanks for getting back around and sharing this. I did my first one @ 1936 miles but did not test it.( w/ some 500 miles of travel) Good peace of mind for many here seeing those results.

I'm a bit confused here. Why are you changing the oil after 1-2k miles? Just because it's the factory initial oil and it gets contaminated quicker than when it's changed? This is my first NEW 4Runner, but my last 3 I got used, I did oil change every 10k and never had a mechanical problem and drove them 200-500k miles each.

higher chance to get any large metal shavings and or metal debris that will float thru the system out of the system sooner than later, but thats only my opinion.

plus doing it at every 5k on a turbo engine is better in the long run (and i know people will say stick to the oem timeline) but i have seen what 10k oil changes look like on a modern toyota turbo engine vs 5k or even 3k (for those old die hards). if you want some proof go look for ADM video on CCnut YT page on oil changes. i did 10k changes on my NA engines and those seem fine but i wouldnt chance it on a turbo engine. that is just my opinion and observations.

not my factual based opinion but i think doing a 1k oil change probably helped with the longevity of our 23 tundra engine that is currently under recall for a long block replacement. granted it only has 16k miles in 2 yrs but i think that helped vs those that are sitting and waiting for a long block replacement.

i know our engine is in the block 5 of replacement program and they are still in block 4 of the replacement program. i also think after the long block replacement our mpg will go up from what i have seen posted of others that had them replaced. our avg is roughly after 2 yrs is 12.99 with the lowest being 6.91 (extreme cold snaps during winter here with a lot of remote starts) to a max of 18.52 mpg doing 75 mph. i know it should be closer to 21 with our non HV model but we are not even close to the stated window sticker of 23 mpg

I recently took it in and I will say I have not been to a dealer in a while since i've maintained my cars myself. What I saw compared to pre covid times is making rethink taking it in for anything else.

First, they are so busy everyone is running around. They are bound to forget, skip or check things.
2. They did my service and I asked the service tech about any TSB's he searched his computer and said none exist.
3. My maintenance record I received said they checked the transmission oil, I talked to the guy that apparently did, I had a question for him, and he later told he never did. Even though the record says he checked.
4. The rear brakes are 1mm less than the front for some reason, that didn't make sense to me.
5. All around chaos and confusion, they just have numbers to go through its not their car they don't care.

How many miles do you run on conventional oil and then switch over to synthetic oil.
