Which Drive Mode are you all using for daily driving?

I have been running Comfort mode for my daily drive and I am not totally sure what it is doing. It does not feel much different than Normal in everyday use.

What mode are you all using and why Does Comfort actually alter throttle response or suspension in a meaningful way Or is Normal the better default

First thing I do is put it in Sport. I wish I could set it as the default.

I drive mostly in Sport. I'm like a 16 year old. I like the sound and the little extra kick, miles per gallon be damned!

I'm running in ECO for daily driving. It's still pretty peppy!

Some of us were born to drive in normal on the daily. I have yet to use anything else, but it is still early.

I use eco all the time...

if I am pretending it matters, then sport

sport when entering a highway or exiting for faster lane threading
response to other knuckleheads

Eco. But what the hell is comfort mode???

I guess the comfort mode is not on the cheaper models like the SR5.

I run normal. Two reasons: I hate the artificial noise in Sport. And I never bother to change out of the default normal at start to get into Eco. MPG impacts seem all over the map so I go with simple and unamplified.
Also... only Limited and Platinum have the Adaptive Variable Suspension system and the Comfort Sport S/S+ and Custom modes that come with that. Relatively small proportion of 6G4Rs - IF your question is focused on hearing about those modes....

I’ve never picked up on the engine sound enhancement (ESE) in Sport. Is that actually a thing in the TRD Pro?

I use Sport unless I’m doing long road trips on the highway with cruise control, then Eco works fine. You can turn off the engine enhancement sounds with Carista BTW, works fine. Personally I thought the enhancement sounds were pretty minor compared to other cars I’ve had that do the same.

i am trying to take this from memory ... so dont quote me on being right on all the functions per mode

eco = shifts to a higher gear faster (better mpg), starts in 2nd gear (if i remember correctly)
comfort = shocks/suspension set on a softer setting, steering normal, engine/trans normal
normal = regular shifts, will hold gear longer when pushed, shocks/suspension normal, steering normal
sport/sport + = steering firm, shocks/suspension firm, shifts later, faster acceleration (sport + mode sets more suspension/shocks, transmission settings not available in sport mode)
custom = you can set steering, shocks, transmission to different modes (eco, comfort, normal, sport ... but some will lock out eco, comfort, normal, sport)

tow-haul mode is also a setting but not from the drive mode dial
mts mode is outside the normal drive mode dial but is considered a driving mode


try tow-haul mode instead of sport/sport +, a lot of nannies shut off in tow haul mode

what i learned on the tundra in the different modes also apply to the 4R higher trims (especially those that have avs suspension)

only thing we dont get in the 4R avs is the ability to actually lower/raise the suspension manually like for loading the bed in the tundra (i can raise lower the bed about 1in to 2in, but it will go back to normal setting when you put it into drive)

also we dont get the ability to look out the rear cab camera with a button like the tundra to view the bed (like when hauling a load)

also forgot to add, if you feel the suspension is bottoming out on an avs vehicle, there is a pivot arm for the avs suspension that can be adjusted to change the normal ride height.

this was found out on the tundra avs equipped ones, you could adjust the pivot arm and reduce the bottom out effect. i think a tsb was eventually released to fix it since 22/23's where having a lot of customer complaints about it.

ack forgot to add, i run normal

eco mode on the tundra actually made mpg worse, sport gave better mpg, comfort helped on expansion joints on long trips (soften them) sport when driving in big city traffic (aka atlanta) firmed up the shocks and steering

tow haul mode would just smoke the tires way to easy with no load but it would put a smile on your face and make you giggle

I'm 82 years old. I drive in ECO all the time. Haven't even tried the other options. I live on a mountain road. From the highway at 50 feet above sea level it's 6 miles up to my home at 1900 above sea level. I Never felt the need for more power. I don't typically carry a lot of extra weight in my 4runner. The wife and I combined is under 300 lbs.
