First service and oil change at 10k miles recommended by Toyota?!

Two interesting data points, and I folks in the auto industry have told me the same thing about the EPA and credits for the manufacturers:
1) When this engine was introduced in in the 2022 Lexus NX, the recommended oil change interval was 5K (and not 10K)
2) Take a quick look at how many cars from the last 10 years are experiencing catastrophic engine failures around the 100-130K mile mark... mostly lubrication related. If you have not seen them, talk to your mechanic.. and get an ear full.

Yes, I have heard the same thing from a master mechanic and diagnostician. He swears by every 3K miles! 10K is just asking for trouble. I will change it every 5K.

I am not necessarily a fan of doing a change at any particular interval for the sake of it. Blackstone testing is fairly cheap. I will send in a sample at my 1K change, a 2500K change, 4K, and keep going until I get a bad test result.

Using a quality synthetic oil, I have yet to make it to 5K miles. Usually 4K has been fine, and 5K is degraded enough that it needs a change.. therefore, I change at 4K. Will see how it goes with this engine.

Ideal conditions do not exist for 99% of people to go 10k.

If you plan on keeping the rig 4Ever then do what makes you sleep better at night, but most professionals in the industry (not gonna quote) will stay clear of the 10k intervals....

Oils and engines have come a long ways and 10k can work in occasions, but as regular service.......
The issue lies when folks just go by the 10k and disregard everything else like time, conditions, etc...( as the manual states)..... here I got rambling....

Anyways I did 1900, then 6900 and will do 5- 6k afterwards. I sleep well

10k miles is totally fine in 2025.

With the advent of Ultra Low Sulphur Gasoline (10ppm) in the USA around 2021, the oil in your engine fouls at a much slower rate than previous.

Oil religion is a touchy subject, and has a built in 10-15yr lag as the body of knowledge among the masses evolves.

In Central Europe where they also have 10ppm gasoline, cars run 2yr / 18.5kmi intervals with their oil.

You should never Wait until 10,000 mi to change your oil. There are plenty of engineers out there that have videos testing the oil with those high miles on them and finding everything from moisture to debris in it. Oil is cheap and easy to change, if you want it to last several hundred thousand miles it should be changed at 5K miles. Looking closely at the owner's manual that 10,000 mile Mark is under optimal circumstances but if you're doing short trips around town in stop and go traffic eventually you will have a problem, probably after the warranty is up.

Bro, I did 10,000 mile oil change on my 2008 Sequoia from New. I still have it. I have 260,000 miles and I still do 10,000 intervals. Now I get it doesn’t have turbos but I think 10,000 miles on the new forerunner should be OK but it doesn’t hurt to change it at every five or 6000.

going 10k based on toyota is probably ok, but i suspect most people on here will stick with 5k as a min and some hard core will do 3k and some oddballs will do 7500.

personally i do 5k on our tundra, but i did 10k on my 14 4R up until 100k then switched to 5k intervals.

going 5k on a turbo is probably long term not advisable due to several factors

1. new engines now a days burn thru oil faster compared to the old NA engines
2. blow by is more prevelant on turbo's than NA so your oil gets diluted faster
3. the turbo heat breaks down oils faster vs the old NA engines

but for me, the biggest problem i have is duration. the wife's 23 tundra plat can barely get 5-7k per year and i dont really like going less than 2x a year oil changes.

mostly due to our winters and the amount of time during the winters that remote start is used for 10-20 mins a day twice a day (morning and afternoons going to/from work). sometimes going from -20F to op temp is really hard on that oil and other systems since the tundra sits outside 24/7/365.

but thats personal preference, ymmv

5k miles i would think is the interval for oil changes. I did mine at or around 5k on my mkv supra and never had an issues. I dont think there would be any issues on this engine doing it at 5k

It depends on how hard you drive it. Just about every mechanic and even the dealer recommends 5000. There are plenty of websites out there that show you how the oil degrades and gets contaminated with fuel and condensation. Sure you can get high mileage but why take a chance since oil is so cheap? I talked to a Toyota engineer at one of their events, he said 5K is a safe bet. Once a year I send my oil off to be tested and even changing it at 5K there was a good amount of condensation and fuel in the oil, I can just imagine at 10K. Doing these tests you'd be surprised at how much metal there is in the oil .

Understand his advice is a tad superficial and does not necessarily apply to the 2024+ models of Tundra, Tacoma if you take the right measures.

Using a quality filter and Euro spec oil will definitely get you close to the official 10k mi factory interval.

However, this can easily be impacted with the fuel quality in your area.

Using Toyota branded oil or Mobil 1, both made by the same company is the best for a Toyota. European engines are built differently and require different oil for a reason. Of course if you can't afford to change your oil at 5K I understand but in the long run, if you want to get more than half a million miles out of your Toyota engine like I have all of mine, follow the 5K rule like just about every mechanic or engineer will tell you.

Thing is, the 2.4 I4 Turbo in the newer Toyotas more closely align with the "differently built" European engines of present day now.

They're a firm departure from the lumpy, agrarian V6 and V8 engines of yesteryear.

Mechanics tell you to do 5K intervals because it gets your car in their shop where they can bill you work.

If you really want to use Toyota branded oil, rather use the 0w-20 C5 spec used in the Supra.

Toyota does not specify an oil standard, like other manufacturers - you have license to do what you please in the same grade of oil for the most part.

The euro specifications in this grade, like VW508, supercede anything put out by the API, ILSAC, etc. bodies.

I did my first oil change at 756 miles. I sent a sample off to Blackstone. I will share the results when I get them, which will be about a week.

Doing the first one tomorrow at 1k, will go every 5k after that, especially since I don’t drive all that many miles a year. It’s a $70K vehicle, so figure it’s cheap insurance.
