First service and oil change at 10k miles recommended by Toyota?!

Took my TRD Sport in for its first service and oil change at 5000 miles. Was told it wasn't due for an oil change until 10k miles. I think my jaw hit the floor. Anyway, they said they could certainly do an oil change today but it would have to be one of the two oil changes allowed under the free 2-year/24k miles service or I could pay out of pocket for it. I said I would pay for it.

I'm blown away that Toyota thinks it's ok to go 10k miles before the first oil change and every 10k after that!

Definitely recommend changing it every 5K. Just do it yourself. Lots of people on the forum are changing at 1k, 2.5K, 5K, then every 5K after that. This helps get the metal out from break in and keeps your turbo cool and lubricated. I’ll make sure to put a Toyota oil filter back on it at the 5K change before the dealership service so they’ll be none the wiser.

Dont waste your time and money doing oil changes earlier. You wont gain anything from doing that.

This is not entirely true. Fluid changes impact the vehicles EPA Environment impact score. Increase intervals, lower score.

Anyone who follows a 10k mile change on a forced induction motor is taking a gamble.

If you would like to save $50/$75 every year go right ahead. My $60k machine will get fresh oil every 5k miles max.

Wrong.

Does anyone ever read the manual anymore?
"For customers who primarily drive their vehicle under any of the listed Special Operating Conditions, the motor oil and filter should be replaced at 5,000 miles or six months, REGARDLESS OF THE OIL USED (OR CERTIFICATION OF THE VEHICLE)."

These conditions include towing a trailer, extended idling in traffic (such as taxi use), extensive driving on dirt or gravel roads, and repeated short trips of less than five miles, especially in freezing conditions.

Unless you've done oil testing and have proven the 10,000 miles is fine for your driving conditions, then most people dont want to hear it. There is no risk of changing the oil at 5k, the risk of NOT changing it is far greater. Massive hint from Toyota right up there in quotes!! Out of abundance of caution at a minimum, you should at 5K.

Offloading your thinking can be costly, its ok to think and ponder.

I took mine is at 1,000 miles. Paid $90. Will go again at 5,000 miles and every 5,000 after that. The 10,000 and 20,000 should be free.

I changed my oil at 1,100. Oil was perfect, as there were no metal shavings visible. I paid the hundred, and when they finished, they bolted my new skid plate on. I also had them remove the air dam while they were there with a wrench. I will do every 5K with the 10 and 20 at the dealer. It doesn't hurt to change oil every 5K and do a fluid check at the same time. No car ever suffered from too much maintenance.

You should never Wait until 10,000 mi to change your oil. There are plenty of engineers out there that have videos testing the oil with those high miles on them and finding everything from moisture to debris in it. Oil is cheap and easy to change, if you want it to last several hundred thousand miles it should be changed at 5K miles. Looking closely at the owner's manual that 10,000 mile Mark is under optimal circumstances but if you're doing short trips around town in stop and go traffic eventually you will have a problem, probably after the warranty is up.

I think you should trust companies and other people blindly. Never question! Ignore history too. Because companies always have your best interest at heart. đź’•

My sales rep told me 16k for each oil change.

Two interesting data points, and I folks in the auto industry have told me the same thing about the EPA and credits for the manufacturers:
1) When this engine was introduced in in the 2022 Lexus NX, the recommended oil change interval was 5K (and not 10K)
2) Take a quick look at how many cars from the last 10 years are experiencing catastrophic engine failures around the 100-130K mile mark... mostly lubrication related. If you have not seen them, talk to your mechanic.. and get an ear full.
