I called the local dealership today and they want to charge me $1500.00 to change the diff's and tranny
i spent about 140 in oil/parts and did both last night in two hours while also trying to record for my TikTok, $1500 is insane!

Ordered all my diff fluid. I need to swing by the dealer for washers.
Im at 6K. Ill do the rear first. The front shortly after, then eventually the transfer case. Those always look good. This post was a good reminder. Thanks.

How often do you guys suggest changing the differential and transfer case fluids?

If I recall correctly, I think the Car Care Nut suggested both to be changed at 30K and then every 50K thereafter

It’s probably overkill but I do mine every 25k. It’s more about simplicity and easy to keep track of for me. Plus I occasionally tow heavy stuff, and sometimes that involves 4WD off road, so I prefer to be proactive on the maintenance.

I think it's more important to do it between 5-10k just to get rid of the metal particles from the break in, that's just my opinion.

Well if you figure a quart and a half for the transfer case at 100 plus dollars a quart from Toyota, then 7-8 Qts of gl5 for the front and rear diffs at around $20+ a quart.

Then add $150 to $200 per hour for the mechanics labor/ 2 hours.

You're probably getting up near the $900+ mark. Then do a 20% markup to keep the Dealer's doors open. So $800 to $900 to do a drain and fill for the drivetrain is probably right in the ballpark at full retail dealer prices.

You have to kind of look at it forwardly as that it takes a specific amount of skill and tools to do this procedure. In my eyes the hardest part is the transmission because you need to be at the proper temperature to get an accurate fill.

At some point most people will just say I don't want to deal with it. And they'll do their service at the recommended time or mileage interval.

You'd probably shave a few hundred off to go to a local private Toyota mechanic or off-road shop. Legally we are allowed to take our cars to any facility to do maintenance, just keep your receipts and Records.

Just my two cents. Good luck.

I'll stick to the 30K and 50K after for diff's and transfer case. Transmission, I cannot remember right now but its following The Car Nut's recommendation. I don't Off-road or tow anything.

Depends on how much you care. If you care about your rig change it often. If you dont care dont change it.

OK, but this isn't helpful. You can also change your engine oil every 100 miles, but that would be ridiculous. There are levels...

Unless you really really care. Lol

It is all personal preference. For myself I do 3k mile oil changes because of turbos. I will do diffs and transfer case at 10k and trans fluid at 25k.

Multiple people will chime in saying that is a waste of money and if I was poor I guess it would be. I like to take care of my stuff.

I agree ! I like to take care of my vehicles. Even though I can no longer dabble in the heavy mechanic stuff any more. I find working on my vehicle to be therapy. When I’m not messing around in the garage, you’ll find me fishing for tarpon or snook. So if it’s what you like to do, do it!
