Failed State Inspection because of OEM Premium Taillights

I am so mad! I just had my 4Runner ORP Fail the Va State Inspection. I purchased and installed OEM Premium Taillights but he couldn’t find the DOT markings on the Taillights. Anybody run into something this stupid? I will take it to a dealership to get the state inspection. I would figure that they would know an OEM taillight when they see them.

Seriously, what kind of stupid person did you run into? And I was thinking mine is totally fine!

i just went outside and looked at a brand new 2026 F150 tail lights and all it had was a p/n and api marking no "DOT" marking on it all.

the headlights had a VOR DOT marking

same for the 2025 ram 1500 for rear and headlights.

on my 25 platinum, the headlights have a drl vor dot marking, but nothing on the tail lights.

from what i gathered, oem are now marking the "HOUSING" not the visible part of the lamp lens.

Headlight Requirement:

Only headlights are explicitly required by federal law (49 CFR 571.108 - starts at s6.5) to have "DOT" lettering on the lens.

For anyone considering tinting their tail lights with non-OEM solutions, I have read if you get rear ended, it's possible the other driver's insurance could claim it was due to your tail lights being too dark.

It also gives cops a great excuse to pull you over.

Sorry to hear you had issues at inspection, but the tech is probably looking for a bright red tail light. Even if it's technically OEM, they probably don't have the skill or time to look up and confirm it is a genuine OEM aftermarket part from the Toyota dealer. They will just see it's darker than stock and fail it.

these tails are not tinted or shaded and are stock.
the difference is the additional black stripe piping accents
vs the 'poverty lights' lol. but yeah at a passing glance it looks
like some rando ebay version to be honest

Once had a cop pull my over in my Dodge 1500 and said I had illegal lift blocks in the rear. They were OEM but he argued with me that they weren't and I actually waited until another 1500 went by to show him.

He still wasn't convinced but lost his bravado and left me leave without as much as a warning...lol.
