I am so mad! I just had my 4Runner ORP Fail the Va State Inspection. I purchased and installed OEM Premium Taillights but he couldn’t find the DOT markings on the Taillights. Anybody run into something this stupid? I will take it to a dealership to get the state inspection. I would figure that they would know an OEM taillight when they see them.

Seriously, what kind of stupid person did you run into? And I was thinking mine is totally fine!

i just went outside and looked at a brand new 2026 F150 tail lights and all it had was a p/n and api marking no "DOT" marking on it all.

the headlights had a VOR DOT marking

same for the 2025 ram 1500 for rear and headlights.

on my 25 platinum, the headlights have a drl vor dot marking, but nothing on the tail lights.

from what i gathered, oem are now marking the "HOUSING" not the visible part of the lamp lens.

Headlight Requirement:
Only headlights are explicitly required by federal law (49 CFR 571.108 - starts at s6.5) to have "DOT" lettering on the lens.

  • Alternative Certification Codes: Many new vehicles use SAE or international standards (E-codes) that satisfy U.S. requirements without using the exact "DOT" text.
  • Hidden Markings: Codes are frequently stamped on the internal plastic housing hidden behind the body paneling rather than the outer lens.
  • LED Integration: Modern LED assemblies are designed as single, non-serviceable units, making traditional, large, stamped, or molded exterior markings unnecessary

all the tail lamps refer back to this entry

S6.5.1.2 Each original equipment or replacement lamp or reflective device specified in Table I, except for a headlamp, or an item of associated equipment specified in S9 may be marked with the symbol “DOT” which constitutes a certification that it conforms to the requirements of this standard.
emphasis mine

For anyone considering tinting their tail lights with non-OEM solutions, I have read if you get rear ended, it's possible the other driver's insurance could claim it was due to your tail lights being too dark.

It also gives cops a great excuse to pull you over.

Sorry to hear you had issues at inspection, but the tech is probably looking for a bright red tail light. Even if it's technically OEM, they probably don't have the skill or time to look up and confirm it is a genuine OEM aftermarket part from the Toyota dealer. They will just see it's darker than stock and fail it.

these tails are not tinted or shaded and are stock.
the difference is the additional black stripe piping accents
vs the 'poverty lights' lol. but yeah at a passing glance it looks
like some rando ebay version to be honest

Once had a cop pull my over in my Dodge 1500 and said I had illegal lift blocks in the rear. They were OEM but he argued with me that they weren't and I actually waited until another 1500 went by to show him.

He still wasn't convinced but lost his bravado and left me leave without as much as a warning...lol.

Not all badges come from achievement.... :)

My point was that even if it is an OEM part, it is not a stock part for your model of 4Runner.

As you mentioned, it was a part you bought after purchase and replaced the stock light with. Now you have tail lights that are darker than stock. It doesn’t matter that it’s an OEM part, the issue is that it’s not stock for your model, and darker than the stock lights.

If you got a TH or some other model with these darker stock lights from the factory, I would assume it would pass inspection just fine.

I agree it is a bit silly that the same lights would be fine if they were installed from the factory instead, but it is what it is.

That may be your point, but the inspector's point was apparently that the taillights are lacking a DOT reference stamped on them (something that apparently very few OEM taillights do, at least visibly to the exterior).

Whatever criteria you've invented is not what the OP is running up against.

This happened to me once in Texas with a Golf GTI.

I had replaced the all-red incandescent rear tail lamps with full LED w/t amber turn signal EU market lights.

Failed because there was no DOT stamp on them, only a part number and ECE code.

Update: After gathering documentation on the Toyota Premium Taillights that I purchased and the VA vehicle inspection regulations, I returned to the service station that failed my 4Runner. After presenting my documentation, the owner directed his inspector to pass my 4Runner. Goes to show, don’t put up with idiocy, out work them. Good Luck out there.
