Hi everyone, I was hoping someone could offer some insight on my situation if possible. I'll be flying to Milwaukee to pick up my new '25 4Runner, but I have a 760 mile drive home to make with it. I've read the 4Runner's break-in instructions which are do-able, but I was still curious if making this long drive immediately could cause long term issues?

I would take the extra time to take small country roads when possible. You want the engine to work it's way trough the rpm range during break in ( not near redline of course). Sitting on the highway for long periods/ miles @ 1.8-2K is not ideal.
maybe break the trip into 4 sections.
1. back roads
2.highway.
3.back roads.
4. Highway.
Enjoy the ride! These 4R ride sooo nice and smooth.

Just vary the rpm and dont use cruise control. We had a 500 mile trip from dealer home and that is what we did. Then first oil change at 700 miles.

This is exactly what I did.
I did the same, and on top of it, I was mostly in Sport mode, as it is more responsive to the changes and varied RPM more often based on your throttle input.

It's not Sport Mode like in performance cars - it won't even come close to the red line.

I live only 5 miles from my dealer so did not have this problem. I would suggest as the others have said. Take back roads, vary your speed and do not exceed 60 MPH, do not use cruse control. Stop about every hour and take a break, maybe even make it a 2 day trip. I would also check all fluid levels and tire pressure before you leave to verify the dealer prep was done correctly.

per the manual..... some the recommendations have changed values from what they use to be (if you are old enough, they were higher)

●For the first 200 miles (300 km): Avoid sudden stops.
●For the first 500 miles (800 km): Do not tow a trailer.
●For the first 1000 miles (1600 km):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

in the old manuals it said

  • not to go over 4000 rpm,
  • minimize idling,
  • not to do short trips (but recommended long trips instead)
  • and to change the oil at 500/1000 miles on a re built engine (but some people took it to do it even on factory new engine)
