First oil change at 500 miles

Hey, just wondering how many of the new owners will decide to do the first oil change at 500 miles, the owners manual recommends 5,000 and will the warranty accept the first change at the 500 if we wanted to or it has to be done outside at a third part place or DIY?

I will do mine at 1000-1500, then 5000. I will however do at the dealership to avoid issues on a warranty claim.

I will do the first oil/filter change around 1000 miles. Then every 5K. As long as you keep records they cannot deny warranty. I keep a log with my receipts. Does the manual recommend 5k or 10k intervals? I don’t have my Sport yet.

I heard the service schedule was 10k. I too will do 1k and 5k or a year after that.

From the Toyota manual:

"Maintenance Providers:

Maintenance and repair services may be performed by you or by any automotive service provider you choose.

Toyota will not deny a warranty claim solely because you used a service provider other than a Toyota dealership for maintenance and repairs. However, damage or failure caused by improper maintenance or repairs is not covered under warranty."


You also do not have to keep logs, as it will not inherently void your warranty. However, they do recommend it of course.


Check out the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. It’s federal law.

Excuse my ignorance but why do an oil change so early?
I was under the impression that the first oil change should be done later than normal because the oil in a brand new car has additional additives to help with the break in process? At least that's what I've read.

It would be good to know if the oil used by the factory on a new engine is different ot the same old Toyota/Mobil.

the thought is that a bunch of ''fresh'' metal on metal contact will create more debris so its a good idea to change the initial oil early to get all the shavings out.

Not sure if it matters much these days but for peace of mind I will also be changing my oil at around 1k miles and then every 5k miles after.

That makes sense. I can see the logic in both POV. I change oil every 5k but on my Civic I did the 1st oil change @ 7,500 miles going with the wait b/c of "break in oil" logic. Well shit, now IDK what to do haha. I'm at ~650 miles

I'll do my first oil change at 500-1000 miles, just depends on when I pick it up. If I pick it up early enough to drive it home before I leave on my road trip it'll be 500 miles otherwise I'll change it when I get to my destination 1000 miles from where I pick it up. Then I'll do 5k intervals.

I’m going to cancel my appointment until I get 5,000 miles then do one at 10,000. After that every 7,000 miles with full synthetic. A 1,000 mile oil change don’t count as your first 10,000 miles oil change. A motor going to always have shaving in it from wear and tear. Their good shaving and bad shaving Coming from a machinist background I had. Nothing wrong changing your oil every 1,000 miles you got the money and time. I know a guy chan his oil in his hot rod before winter. It sit for six months until spring he change it again . He said it old. I tol him Oil is a billion years old you using. Oil can sit on the self of a store for months and years. Their no date on an oil can. Everyone do what best for them on oil change. Steering other on nonsense is crazy.

+1 to this, paid out of pocket at 4k, the dealer told me the first scheduled wasn't until 10k.

I did mine yesterday @the Dealer under Toyota care and also got tires rotated under that too: 1932 miles. They tried to explain the 10k....blah blah.. but I said I no, please and thank you.
No more fuzz.
I cheeked the oil periodically in the last few hundred miles and every time you wiped you could see metal grey with the oil, also it smelled very gasoline like ( not familiar w/ synthetics here).

You get 5 tire rotations and 2 oil changes, not sure if you can take your 2 free oil changes at any time though ?
