How often do you *actually* replace your cabin and engine OEM stock paper air filters?

Around 30k miles on 5th gen 4runner
That is in mixed city country driving no dusty roads
Possibly less on the 6th gen
Cabin air filters i replaced every 6 months
Dealerships rarely replace them
That was doing 25k miles per year
If one drives less it will be less often

For the engine air filter, I think the recommended interval for normal use is 30k, but it might need to be replaced sooner if you drive in a dusty environment frequently. At least change every 30k so that your engine warranty won't be affected.

I changed mine just now at 20k because it's cheap and provides peace of mind, but the old filter was probably fine.

Cabin air filter is more preference, but it's convenient to replace it at the same time as the engine air filter, so I do both together.

Whatever you do, don't pay the dealer to install either.

I usually do a visual inspection of both the engine and cabin filters after I go on an off roading trip and replace if they're dusty. When going with others (and not always in the lead) I'll even use the compressor to do a field clean on the engine air filter at the end of the day.

Living in dusty NM you might want to get in the habit of checking every so often to see how quickly they get dusty and clean / replace accordingly.

Those with the hybrid trims, don't forget to check the hybrid battery filters also, especially if you see dusty roads.

.
I have had so many hybrid vehicles and I was like what is that like blinker fluid? Not once has a dealer or a book said anything about that. To my surprise this was actually thing on Toyota vehicles.

I always have my HVAC on recirculate...so after 6+ months of ownership it still smells new. I dont think I will need to replace my cabin filter any more often than once a year. It only has 5600 miles on it after 6.5 months.

Heat is one of the leading causes of hybrid battery failure. The airflow system over the hybrid battery is very important. It's probably not a bad idea to check the hybrid air filter when you change your oil. They have made the filters very accessible.

I check mine every 5-8k miles, more often if I am going off road a lot. I replace them as necessary. My dealer likes to recommend changing them quite often because they want the added profit margin job. I’m okay with that, but I do my own.

I do like the charcoal cabin air filters, as they seem to handle and clear funky smells better.

Change your cabin air way more frequently than engine air filter
A restricted cabin air filter strains your HVAC fan
It also can become a nest for rodents if vehicle is parked outside a lot
Dont need to use the carbon ones just standard if it looks gray replace if it looks black it is way overdue
