Has anyone installed a turbo blanket in their 4Runner? It should help with turbo spooling while keeping everything else under the hood cooler.

You should try one out and share an update afterward.

How would it help turbo spool?
A turbo blanket helps turbo spool faster by trapping heat in the turbine housing, making exhaust gases hotter, more expansive, and faster-moving, which spins the turbine wheel more efficiently, creating boost sooner and reducing lag

maybe you should have bought a trackhawk :)

/s

but really, its a off roader mostly, not like we are trying to push for 0-60 times in the sub 3 sec range.

i am glad they made it better than the 5th gen and gets out of its own way now.

a bunch of Toyotas
Kiichiro Toyoda is rolling in his grave.

Turbo blankets come with risks.

T24A-FTS turbo I4 is a twin scroll. so....exactly what turbo lag are you trying to rectify ?

Go ahead and wrap that turbo, all for no power gain, and a miniscule improvement in lag
if any improvement at all.

You'll reduce reliability and introduce failure points, you'll need to park and idle 3
minutes after every drive to prevent oil coking, you may end up cracking the housing...
and hopefully your blanket won't catch fire if it gets even slightly contaminated.

Save your $$$.
Twin scroll and not a performance racing Turbo.

I don’t think I want to trap yet more heat into the turbo
More of the same:

Yes, a turbo blanket can potentially help with turbo spooling while keeping everything else under the hood cooler. A lot of people use turbo blankets with no issues, useless there is an oil leak! In which case there is a fire hazard. However, the improvements are very small and generally only realized if you are on the track and seeking a ~0.01 sec. improvement.

Things to consider before putting a turbo blanket on a 2025-26 4Runner:
  • If a turbo gets too hot without proper cooling, it may experience reduced lifespan.
  • In general, a turbo raises the temperature between 10-20 degrees F per PSI boost. So, a 4Runner running a maximum boost of ~20 psi x 15 degrees = 300 F.
  • The hotter the air leaving the turbo, the ā€˜harder’ the intercooler must work. The 4Runner has an air-to-air intercooler, while reliable, not the best at cooling. In fact, the air-to-air intercooler does nothing unless the vehicle is moving. Hotter air after the intercooler results in lower performance.
  • A hot turbo can be especially ā€˜hard’ on the oil when the truck is shut off. The blanket holds the heat for a much, much longer time.
  • If the turbo fails, I’m certain there would be a question if a warranty claim is involved.
  • So, is the real gain worth the possible issues?
There's no right answer, each of us has to determine how far we want to "pay to play".
