I'm guessing when you go with anything larger than stock most people just remove the spare? I've been blessed to never need to change a tire on the side of a road but don't like the idea of losing that safety net (on trails or somewhere remote). I carry sidewall repair kit and plugs already.

ive also been fortunate enough to never have to change a tire on the side of the road. How does it work if ive gone aftermarket 33s? could i make a short drive with the spare donut or should i just lose it for weight reduction

You can put the smaller spare on one of the front wheels and continue as long as you stay in RWD.

I would only use this option for the shortest distance possible because of the extra wear on the front diff, but at least I’m not stuck.

I would not do this on a Platinum or a Limited with FT4WD.

I also wouldn’t go off roading without a matching spare. Ideally a spare with about the same amount of wear as my other tires.

Then again, if you’re close to civilization you can always just hit the SOS button in the ceiling and get a flatbed to come pick you up.

So I swapped out my stock SR5 wheels/tires for a set of Method 703 wheels and 285/70r17 Toyo tires.

My plan was to take one of my stock SR5 wheels that is just sitting in my garage, getting a semi-equivalent sized tire to the 285/70 mounted on it and using that as my new spare.

I figure that would be much better than the stock SR5 donut that is mounted there now.

This is the part that I personally don't understand. If you're outfitting your rig such that you have no spare, are your mods mostly for cosmetic/show purposes? Because functionally, it seems strange that someone who is building a rig for actual 4x4 use would opt out of having a matching spare, let alone opt out of having a spare at all...

I've read people say and personally thought about semi deflating a slightly larger than stock tire so it fits in the stock spot. Anyone been successful with that?

Retrospectively thinking, everyone I knew used to put them on top. Roof baskets were very popular, and I am sort of leaning toward that upgrade when I get ready to carry more temporarily. I don't see a need to have a full-blown over Landing roof rack for daily driving, so a basket is an easy ad and remove. Just my two cents.

as long as the diameter (ie same or as close to oem revs per mile) of the new setup matches the diameter of the oem tire you really dont need to swap the spare out

Bigger than 33 will fit with a slight mod. I fit a 285/70/18 as a spare. With a K03 that’s just under 34”. Thread for pics and comments if you’re interested is
Largest size spare tire fit in undermount carrier?

I personally wouldn’t be out in a remote spot without a spare.

I have a 285 under my rig. I think it’s 33.something.

This is exactly what I did. 285/70 on stock SR5 wheel.

I removed my spare, and the lift mechanism (so easy) just for weight reduction, but primarily because I've never needed it, have multiple other options if I get a flat, and I too have larger tires. However, I don't off-road, mine is more of a work truck use case, including towing. The small spare is not usable for a towing situation (says the manual). So, there's that use case for me as well.

I know removing the spare blows some guys minds, but there are all kinds of kits and roadside assistance out there that maybe it's only necessary to lug around that lump when going
off-roading.
