Changed oil today at 1K. Following the oil change, the front skid plate was installed. Put the air dam in long-term storage. Much better.

Here are a couple of pics. One is the new plate, the other is a profile without an air dam. The air dam will not fit back on without some minor creative cutting and custom effort. I'm going to roll as is for a bit to see if there is any difference with or without dam. As far as gas mileage, I have low expectations in any 4Runner except my Gen 1 with the old 4 22RE.

I'm seriously considering painting the indented portion of TOYOTA in Heritage Blue, matching the exterior color. Is that completely stupid, or would it be a nice detail touch?

I think that would look sweet if you can match the paint closely. Definitely something unique that you wouldn't see on anybody else's rig.

I removed the air dam but I am worried about the radiator. I can see a gap between the bumper and the original skid plate. The Land Cruiser skid plate will protect the radiator? Or I have to re-install the air dam to protect it? (TRD SPORT PREMIUM) please help me to decide what to do, thank you

I want to order the Land Cruiser Skid Plate but also wonder about the gap between the bumper. Does the Land Cruiser Skid Plate protect the radiator? Or is the TRD Skid Plate better at doing that?

What is protecting your radiator now?

Michael - I would think the cheap air dam is, but it seems that will not be able to be installed once the skid plate is installed. I was just wondering if either skid plate offers any protection to the bottom of the radiator. Can you offer any opinion? FYI I really like what you did with the Land Cruiser Skid Plate.

Assuming you go with the 250 LC skid I have, you can put the air dam back on, but it requires one of two different modifications. 1. The skid plate is squared on the ends upfront. You will note your current cover has the corners dog-eared. By using a hand grinder or any tool of your choice, you can cut the slight dog ear on the new square plate. 2. The squared portion of the plate comes into contact with the air dam at openings where the dog ear clears. You can trim the exact angle off the air dam opening, and the air dam will go on and off without problems.

Both of these options will allow you to remove the plate or air dam without interference from the other. Currently, I am undecided. I like the look without the air dam, and I like the squared plate. If forced to make a decision, I would probably clip the air dam. It would only slightly enlarge the opening from the backside and wouldn't be noticeable. Experience suggests cutting plastic is easier than cutting metal.

Thought this was such a cool idea that I did it. Got the LC skid last week and put it on last night. Picked up some Heritage Blue touch up paint from a local dealer.
I did not reinstall the air dam in part because my 285/70R18s rub on the last inside connection point which I have bent back to avoid the rubbing, but it looks to me like the LC plate does not interfere with the air dam connections. I'll also note that the LC skid came with a black metal "bracket" that attaches just under the front of the skid. I went ahead and installed it since I had 2 extra bolts after removing the plastic skids - thinking that it might block that small opening in front of the radiator. It does a bit but the gap is still there (see photo). Will post all the mods in the "what did you do today" thread at some point but I liked how the blue TOYOTA turned out so sharing here. (even through a close look reveals my unsteady hand with the brush.)
