OEM lighting generally having better QC and a lower failure rate isn’t the lazy generalization I was referring to.

It was lumping AlphaRex, Morimoto, DEPO, VLAND, and every other aftermarket manufacturer together as identical “Temu garbage” based on forum anecdotes. That’s still a lazy generalization.

And none of it disputes my original comment: the NOVAs are materially brighter than stock and look better. I never claimed they were more reliable than OEM.

So either your issue is with aftermarket products in general, which is odd on a forum largely centered around aftermarket modifications, or your issue is simply that they’re made in China. That argument doesn’t hold up either, considering Tier-1 suppliers like Koito and Hella operate major automotive-lighting plants there.

If someone says AlphaRex (or any aftermarket headlight) isn't built to OEM quality in terms of materials, durability, sealing, optics, or long-term reliability, responding with "I never said it was OEM quality, I only said the output is better" doesn't really address the criticism.

Looks better is completely subjective.

Also, "looks brighter" isn't the same as "performs better." Without objective photometric testing—beam pattern, intensity at distance, foreground illumination, glare, and stray light—it's largely subjective. A headlight can appear brighter simply because it throws more light into the foreground or outside the intended beam pattern. That doesn't necessarily improve seeing distance, and in some cases it can actually be detrimental.

For me, OEM-quality engineering matters. Toyota spends enormous time validating headlamp performance, durability, sealing, UV resistance, vibration, thermal management, and long-term consistency. An aftermarket headlamp may produce a beam that some people prefer, but that doesn't automatically make it a better lighting system overall.

And there's no way around the longevity question. Even if an aftermarket headlamp initially appears brighter, how will it perform after five or ten years? Lens coating durability, LED degradation, moisture resistance, and optical stability all matter. Those are areas where OEM suppliers generally have a strong track record.

So unless there's credible, objective testing showing an aftermarket assembly is genuinely superior—not just subjectively "brighter"—I'd rather keep a well-engineered OEM headlamp than replace it with something of uncertain quality.

The OEM headlights of ORP are pathetic and makes no difference when on high or low beams. Has anyone moved on with after market options. What did you get and how has that worked for you.
Come on now, the ORP headlights are fine.

I don’t disagree with most of that.

OEM assemblies are almost certainly better validated for durability, sealing, UV resistance, vibration, and long-term reliability. I also agree that perceived brightness is not the same thing as objectively superior lighting performance.

But my original comment was never a technical claim that AlphaRex has better optics, beam control, durability, or engineering than Toyota OEM. I said the NOVAs are materially brighter to my eyes, look better, which I clearly stated was my opinion, and have been one of my most complimented upgrades.

You can call those observations subjective, which is fair. What you cannot do is turn them into a claim that I said the entire lighting system was objectively superior to OEM, because I never said that.

They have substantially improved nighttime visibility over the stock SR5 headlights in my actual use. My source is simple: I wheel at night frequently and have personally run both setups on the same vehicle.

At this point, see them side by side in person and decide for yourself. I'm not arguing with people who don't have them or are OEM diehards. Or go read reviews from people using them, I'll get you started. here

I switched mine out early on for the Limited Headlights. There is data available to show the difference in performance (Googled it) so that plus the fit, finish, quality and look are what sold me to upgrade. I dont like the "tuner look" of the after market headlights.

I don't dispute that you prefer the AlphaRex headlights or that they appear brighter to you. That's a valid subjective opinion, and your experience with them is what it is.

Where I differ is the standard of evidence I'd use before concluding they're a better lighting system.

I've been following aftermarket automotive lighting for decades, and my experience has made me skeptical of marketing claims and owner impressions alone. I've seen plenty of aftermarket headlamp assemblies over the years that carried the expected markings or advertised compliance yet still fell well short of OEM in beam quality, fitment, durability, or overall execution. Because of that, I don't put much weight on claims of "they're brighter" or "they improved visibility for me" without objective testing.

For me, the benchmark isn't whether a headlamp appears brighter or gets compliments. It's whether there is objective evidence that it provides better beam control, seeing distance, glare performance, and long-term durability than the OEM system.

Toyota invests an enormous amount of engineering and validation into its lighting systems. Could an aftermarket manufacturer outperform that in some aspect? Certainly—it's possible. But I'd want to see independent evidence demonstrating it, not just testimonials or marketing.

So my position isn't that AlphaRex is necessarily worse. It's that I haven't seen sufficient objective evidence to conclude it's better than the OEM system overall.

Understood. I’m not arguing that they are a better lighting system overall.

I’m saying that, in my use case, they are brighter, have improved my nighttime visibility, and I’m very happy with the purchase. I bought them specifically for better visibility while wheeling at night, and they have delivered exactly that.

If they fail five years from now, so be it. I’d still consider them worth the money and would likely buy another set.

I’m not marketing for AlphaRex, this isn’t a brand deal, and I’m not trying to convince anyone that they are objectively superior to OEM. I’m simply sharing my experience as someone who has actually run both setups.

I’m sorry I don’t have the objective photometric and long-term durability data you’re looking for, but conducting that level of testing simply isn’t worth my time. Maybe I would dig into it if I were unhappy with the purchase, but I’m not.

i wanted to keep it oem and I just really liked how these looked. I also sold the original lights for $700
you know there are LED bulbs for like 65bucks that switch from white drls to amber turn signals....

I wanted these specifically. I didn’t want to just switch out the bulbs in my stock lights. The DRLs are totally different

I only warn that the impression of aftermarket assemblies being brighter or having better output often (almost exceedingly) is a result of improper light patterns that focus on close, foreground lighting and increased scatter above the line that aiming cannot fix.
