I think those are two separate discussions that are getting mixed together.OEM lighting generally having better QC and a lower failure rate isn’t the lazy generalization I was referring to.
It was lumping AlphaRex, Morimoto, DEPO, VLAND, and every other aftermarket manufacturer together as identical “Temu garbage” based on forum anecdotes. That’s still a lazy generalization.
And none of it disputes my original comment: the NOVAs are materially brighter than stock and look better. I never claimed they were more reliable than OEM.
So either your issue is with aftermarket products in general, which is odd on a forum largely centered around aftermarket modifications, or your issue is simply that they’re made in China. That argument doesn’t hold up either, considering Tier-1 suppliers like Koito and Hella operate major automotive-lighting plants there.
If someone says AlphaRex (or any aftermarket headlight) isn't built to OEM quality in terms of materials, durability, sealing, optics, or long-term reliability, responding with "I never said it was OEM quality, I only said the output is better" doesn't really address the criticism.
Looks better is completely subjective.
Also, "looks brighter" isn't the same as "performs better." Without objective photometric testing—beam pattern, intensity at distance, foreground illumination, glare, and stray light—it's largely subjective. A headlight can appear brighter simply because it throws more light into the foreground or outside the intended beam pattern. That doesn't necessarily improve seeing distance, and in some cases it can actually be detrimental.
For me, OEM-quality engineering matters. Toyota spends enormous time validating headlamp performance, durability, sealing, UV resistance, vibration, thermal management, and long-term consistency. An aftermarket headlamp may produce a beam that some people prefer, but that doesn't automatically make it a better lighting system overall.
And there's no way around the longevity question. Even if an aftermarket headlamp initially appears brighter, how will it perform after five or ten years? Lens coating durability, LED degradation, moisture resistance, and optical stability all matter. Those are areas where OEM suppliers generally have a strong track record.
So unless there's credible, objective testing showing an aftermarket assembly is genuinely superior—not just subjectively "brighter"—I'd rather keep a well-engineered OEM headlamp than replace it with something of uncertain quality.
