I am so mad! I just had my 4Runner ORP Fail the Va State Inspection. I purchased and installed OEM Premium Taillights but he couldn’t find the DOT markings on the Taillights. Anybody run into something this stupid? I will take it to a dealership to get the state inspection. I would figure that they would know an OEM taillight when they see them.

For better or worse they stopped state inspections in my county. Still, when they did do them they were never that particular. They just ensured they were functional. In Texas they also give you two years on new registrations before having to inspect and renew. Sucks, but those taillights look great.

Purchase from Toyota Online Parts. Pulled the part number from this forum and purchased them directly from Toyota.

I have the feeling that I ran into an idiot. I will take care of it. Thx for the compliment on the taillights. I like them. I think that it's a little silly that they don't include them on the 4Runner Off Road Premium.

I can't find any markings on my SR5 tails (didn't uninstall them)

VA rules say approved type (DOT or SAE-S)
Inspect for and reject if: 1. Vehicle is not equipped with a rear (tail lamp) or rear lamp combination of an approved type or light assembly does not work as designed by the manufacturer. 2. The vehicle is equipped with more than one rear lamp, if all are not in operating condition.

D. Inspect for and reject if: 1. Motor vehicle, or trailer, except an antique vehicle not originally equipped with a stop lamp, is not equipped with at least two brake lights of an approved type (DOT or SAE-S) that automatically exhibits a red or amber light to the rear when the brake pedal is actuated.

no OEM 4runner tails have visible DOT or SAE marks

Are you sure that is OEM? Because there is part number on it. Where did you purchase it?
those are OEM tails for 2025/2026 4runner and are 100% photometrically compliant for sale in USA. OP just took them from another OEM trim that comes with those specific lights.

You ran into an idiot. Get it inspected at a dealership.

And I thought California was bad. At least we don't have to do anything for a few years on new vehicles.

well cali cops just make up crap anyway for vehicle inspections. i mean they pull people over and state ref them from out of state visiting and expect the vehicle to conform to cali rules.

i am patiently waiting for a YT video of someone getting pulled over and getting state ref for a cali car rental from hertz or something.

the wildest one i have seen is getting state ref'd for a loud muffler on an BEV dodge charger (i think, or it could have been just a ticket)

I cant even imagine state inspections on cars. What a scam. They tried that here many years ago and it failed in a short time. The buildings mostly became quick change oil places.

I like my ORP OEM taillights better.
