I have a 2025 Trailhunter - the door sticker and manual both say the spare should be inflated to 33psi . All four corners have been inflated correctly, but I've been lazy and just left the spare as it was delivered (~45 psi). Once the spare dropped to about 40 PSI per the dash, the TPMS light turned on and the spare was highlighted orange. I just took it in for the 10k service and the dealer re-inflated it the spare to 55 (!) and the light turned off. (I immediately let some air out to keep it under the 51 specified on the sidewall).

It seems like the TPWS system expects the spare to be inflated way higher than the 33 the manual says. The procedure in the manual to change the Tire Pressure Setting (Vehicle Settings -> TPWS Setting -> Tire Pressure Setting -> Setting by Specified Pressure) only prompts for front and rear, not the spare. Is the spare supposed to just live at ~50, and we just let some air out if we have to use it? Or is there something that needs to be reprogrammed?

Thanks!

My spare is at 35# and accurately reported on dash without warning. No idea what is wrong. You could try registering set 2 and see if still a problem. registering can take a while - wants slow speed and turns.
all 5 of my tires were at 55# when I left the dealership

Same with mine. OP, if you lower the spare pressure to 35# and the light comes on saying it's low, you need to take it back to the dealer. That's not correct.

Call me crazy. I don’t see it as a sky is falling scenario if the spare has too much air. I’ve always overinflated spare tires. I don’t have to crawl under the truck as much.

My spare (also Trailhunter) is kept at the same PSI as the other 4 tires and no issues (generally 33 PSI but fluctuates). Every time I rotate my tires (5-tire rotation every 5k miles) I set the pressures for the 4 installed tires to 33/34 so whichever is the spare for that rotation is relatively in range and I have never had a low (or high) tire warning unless I air down for off-road use.

I've noticed rubbing / wear on a specific spot on the side of the spare, and I'm wondering is this is exacerbated by me leaving the spare overinflated. I've reduced the spare to match the other tires, and giving it a month or two to see if it helps.

Awesome, thanks folks. Thought I was going crazy. I'll get it sorted with the dealer.

Was just going to start a thread on this. I had a 5 tire rotation done at the dealer. After they got over whining that there’s no point to a 5 tire rotation, I get it back with a warning light that popped on a day later for low spare tire pressure.

i was also one of the victims of the early hybrid malfunction errors… getting pretty frustrated with my Toyota experience

I have the same spare tire light on also. Lowered the spare to 34psi and the light for spare is still on. Plus dash tire light is on. Is this a malfunction that the dealer has to fix?

spare tire sensor handles 55psi, as well as the other four...55psi max

Max.: Absolute pressure (abs) / 480 kPa (4.9 kgf/cm 2 , 70 psi),
Relative pressure (Gauge) / 380 kPa (3.9 kgf/cm 2 , 55 psi)

Is the tpms in the 4runner somehow different than every other toyota? The light should come on if the tire drops a certain percentage from the original psi it was at when the tpms was reset. Like 15% or something.

it depends.

1. do you run 2 sets of tire profiles ?
2. oem setting is suppose to be 33 psi for the tpws system (profile 1), low warning is usually at 27/28 psi (if the dealer does the correct PDI procedures)

transporting a vehicle (either ship/train or semi) the psi of the tires is usually jacked to 40-50 psi (most of the time no one touches the psi from the ship setting (hence the dealer PDI needs to be done correctly, but sadly i see too many posts where the psi is never adjusted from shipment psi)
