Hi all. This is my first new thread (sorry if this isn't the right place for it).

I'm scheduled to pick up my 4Runner on Monday. The sales manager is asking about purchasing an extended warranty, so I wanted to get you guys' thoughts.

I was a little surprised to learn that the base bumper to bumper is only 3yr/36k mi. The dealer is offering extended to 7 yr/100k mi for a little over $2k. That seems like a decent deal to me, considering all the electronics and such in newer vehicles. Any comments or experiences are welcome. Thanks!

There's a very high percentage chance that if you do decide you want the Toyota extended warranty you can get a better price through places like fd-warranty and others. And, you can do so at month 35/mile 35,000 if you want.

not a deal. you have up to 3/36 to decide on a Toyota Factory Warranty (VSA)
you do not need one now, or next week, or next year

so tell dealer to pound sand and find a much better price later

these guys are legit and sell legitimate Toyota VSA's

I got an 7 yr / 125K - $1375.00 2025 4runner

7Yr / 75k $1500 is what I got. For $18 a month why not.

Note that unfortunately some states, like WA/OR/CA, don't allow the sale these products by any entity other than a dealer licensed in that state. So FD-Warranty can't sell to customers in that state, unless you have an out-of-state physical address at which you can actually receive mail.

As others have said make sure it's a warranty from Toyota and you can take your vehicle anywhere and not just that dealer.

Having said that I like extended warranties for the peace of mind. Did I need it on my 2018 Tacoma I just sold to get my 4 Runner, yes, was it worth the cost, no. Also I read my new 4runner manual and believe it or not there's lots of things on it that are covered for way longer than you think. Read your manual.

Also as another said, as long as you don't get into an accident you can buy an extended warranty up until your factory one expires.

toyota vsa are kinda weird on the terms

a 10/100 plan is only effective after the 3/36 factory warranty but starts from the inservice date of the vehicle.

so technically that 10/100 is only really 7yrs/64k.

its in effect during the 3/36 (the factory warranty takes precedent during the 3/36) but only lasts until you either hit 10yrs or 100k miles from the first in-service date (which is typcially the date the first loan papers are signed for the vehicle)

Waste of money. You can get into a wreck before your factory warranty is over, you can decide to sell your car, so on and so forth. Don't buy one until your factory warranty expires. I've never bought one and I've never needed to use one.

My plan:
Wait 35 months, see how comfortable I feel with the vehicle’s reliability at that point (both based on my own experience with the vehicle as well as widespread issues or the lack thereof reported on here and other communities), make the decision at that point.

I got a similar quote from my dealer I think like $1700 for 10yr. I told them I would hold off until closer to the 3yr mark and decide then. They said the cost could change, I said I'll still wait and in a snap said he could to it for $750 so I took that deal.

if you get into a wreck before 3/36 you can get your money back.

I got rav4 totaled at 42,000 miles and told Toyota TMIS and got most of my rav4 platinum
policy funds back, since it was obvious I wasn't going to need it.

The reason these VSA's say time period/mileage and it
really starts at mile zero (or delivery date miles) is it saves
a whole lot of paperwork and guesswork hassle on calculating
the VSA. My 7/120 is -really- a 4/84000 but if I sold it to you
saying 4/84000, there would be constant guessing when/what/time period
vs just layering it on top of 3/36 and starting from zero.

And no it is not a ripoff. Find a better 7/120
(or if you want to call it 4/84000) for the same price
with the same coverage and essentially no-hassle/no argument repairs

I passed on the factory extended warranty but bought the warranty on all electronics. Not worried about Toyota mechanical reliability. With all the electronics on these vehicles, that’s the road I took. I could have be lied to but, dealer pointed out extended warranty I was offered didn’t cover most of the electronics.
