Range (small fuel tank capacity) is the kryptonite of the 4runner

Mod to bigger, knobbier tires. Remove any stock air dams. Add roof rack. Add heavy gear… mpg will fall

I’m at 19-20 with my Trailhunter, stock tires (shitty off-road, but good mpg), and roof box. Expect 18 w real tires. Lower if I move spare tire to rear

would love a kit to put a tank where the spare lives. Or Toyota figure out realistic tank sizes. Came from a GM that had a 25 gal tank…

Just needed to rant for a second because the range on this thing is ruining the experience for me.

Getting ~280 miles out of a tank is brutal. I can’t even drive to LA on a single tank without having to stop—unless I want to push deep into the fuel reserve, which I’m obviously trying to avoid so I don’t cook the fuel pump.

The worst part? There really isn’t a better alternative on the market ... well G-Wagon lol, and I don't want a bigger suv.

Is a 25-gallon tank from the factory really too much to ask for? In hopes someone from Toyota somehow reads this.

You must have a heavy foot. I drove from the Mexican border to Joshua tree with a little under half tank left.

The 19 gal tank is a bummer, especially since the DTE computer leaves a whole 2-2.5 gallons in reserve...

I’d focus on why you get such poor MPG. I have the non-hybrid. 24.3 mpg mixed driving, mostly in city. 26 highway. When I fill up at Costco, the range is showing 400 plus or minus 3 each time.

Why are there so many people saying "figure out why you are getting less than 20mpg"?
Everyone getting 24mpg drives their vehicle like a 90 year old grandma. No point in having turbos if you arent going to use them. The tank is comically small and smaller than previous generations of 4runner.

Yeah I get 16 mpg and I live at the gas station. It's a 4runner. I lifted it(Factory lift) and put proper all terrains on it. But I'm not sure how long I will keep it at this point.

Where are these people living, on a prairie? I can't get above 18 on a regular basis. But that's OK, a prius doesn't do well offroad.. :)

It is also because we get stiffed in the US with small diesels.

The 2.8 GD6 diesel found in the current Hilux / Fortuner nets 28mpg and has a 21 US gal fuel tank.

That's impressive, idk how you're doing that.
I'm 80% highway, 20% city, and my combined is 19.8mpg.
Averaging roughly 22-23 highway and 17 city, if I were to guess.
Getting 325 miles at fill-up

Its been this consistent from new. I run in eco mode 95% of the time. No mods. OEM wheels and tires at 33psi. Drive at or above speed limits, within reason. Anticipate breaking, etc. Not driving like an old man yet 😝

i run 87 costo gas. I use a chevron fuel system cleaner 300- 500 miles before an oil change.

Thats it. No real magic. I have seen others post similar MPG also. Equally, seen cery low mpg being reported. I this there is a thread gathering mpg numbers.

First road trip (200mi +) I came in at 26.4. Nothing touched or changed from factroy
Second road trip, came in at 24.1. Air dam and fiber skid plate were removed and 1 more person in the vehicle.
Interested to see 3rd road trip now that I swapped to 285/70 17s, no air dam and will be installing LC front skid plate.

I have the air dam on too. Looks great.

No magic and do not drive old man style. I do drive smart, anticipating braking, no accelerating just to brake in the traffic ahead.

I my 4R has returned this mpg since new and its very consistent.

21.4 mpg calculated over three tanks. I drive the same I way I drive my 2011 X5, 2018 Ram 2500, and all my vehicles before. It is about how you drive and where you drive so the numbers are just going to be different.

My normal driving is a mixture of rural and suburban secondary roads and limited-access highway. Secondary-road speeds are generally around 40–55 mph, with normal lower-speed town sections, while some of my regular routes include substantial stretches at 65–70+ mph. I do relatively little dense urban stop-and-go driving, although each route I typically take has a little of that.
