Oil change interval - riddle me this

So as discussed at length the first oil change is at 10k miles and every 10k after. Personally I got my first at 5k and another just before 10k. A few days ago the maintenance required warning started popping up as it always does when an oil change is due. The riddle is why? I am only at 14,845 and I shouldn't get the warning until 20k correct? So as I am ignoring it I look up at the sticker reminder it says 14,277. Do the dealerships create the warning schedule? Something else needs maintenance?

Toyota uses a mileage counter maintenance reminder that will come on every 5,000 miles. It's 2026 and they still haven't moved to an intelligent system that calculates oil life based on engine sensors and driving style like many other brands.

Hello all, I figured I would chime in. I believe we put too much emphasis on Miles when the engine is actually running unless you have a hybrid.

I don't really track miles anymore I just go by operating hours because of long idle times. Just thought I'd mention that it might be worth taking a look at your hours of operation instead of miles, And operating air temperatures.

Engines run they don't care about miles!

Since most of my driving is in town, I am following the Special Operating Conditions schedule. Oil changes at every 5,000 miles or 6 months (also happens to be the schedule GM recommends for my Chevy Silverado).

as mentioned above, toyota has done the 5k reminder (actually 500 miles before is when the remidner is suppose to come on) since at the least the 5th gen. the reminder is set to tire rotation schedule in the maint. manual, not the oil change interval of 10k.

but i personally dont follow the 10k rule. more like 5k now on n/a motors and 4k on turbo's (per AMD from ccnut)

5k and 4k is quite a long distance for us since we hardly put enough miles per month. the wife avg around 400-500 a month and i put about 700-800 a month (mostly driving 55-75 to work 4x10's)
