OEM Onboard Air Compressor (Tire Inflator) install complete using how-to DIY

I know there’s an existing thread related to this topic but thought I’d initiate a new one to gear more towards my own experience installing it.

I completed the OEM onboard compressor "tire inflator" (part number # PT949-89241) install on my TRD ORP Hybrid yesterday and thankfully everything went smoothly. Removing all the required panels took less than 20 mins and the install itself was probably 2-2.5 hours tops.

The Ed Martin Toyota install video of this unit on YouTube came in clutch and I probably watched and studied it 3-4 times before I attempted the install.

Although it was a pricier option than some of the aftermarket offerings, I’m totally appreciative of the OEM integration and functionality for my needs and purpose. Overall, I’m very pleased with how everything turned out!

Looks great. Since I have a non-hybrid I need to change the panel too. Unless someone can show me it’s possible to do it with the open panel on the TRD ORP

Wonder if you can just get the bracket to use for an ARB single to mount there?

Good question. It would be one thing to get the ARB to fit, and a whole other thing to get it to work with the control panel. That’s way above my skill level, but would be interested to see a professional/expert make it come to fruition.

Nice job on the install, Do you have any tips for cutting the panel? The one in the video looks like they buggered it up some in the corners, yours look super clean.

side note, does anyone think some added dyno mat around the sub in the quarters would be of any benefit?

Thank you! Honestly, this is part of the install where I wish I could have done a cleaner job myself, but as long as you don’t cut too large of a hole, the trim piece is pretty forgiving.

Having said that, I used a rotary tool with a 1.5” dia cutting disc to do the majority of the trim, but it does get a little tricky in the rounded corner areas. Also, if the cutting speed is too high, the plastic is gonna melt so you need to be aware of that and take your time. So in the corners, I used a 1/4” drill bit and drilled multiple holes right next to each other to get the general shape of the corners and facilitate the rest of the trim. Like the tech did in the video, you’ll need to locally notch the areas common to the four mounting screw locations for the trim piece to fit properly (I just used a round file).

If I had to do it again, I may have considered using a cutting bit instead of a disc though, but it’s all personal preference.
