The audio system in our JBL equipped vehicles just is a disappointment from factory. The factory sub is barely audible and how the factory system is tuned is not so great. Even when changing low mid and high setting it does not sound good at all.

First I sound deadened the usual places in the vehicle with Amazon matting and closed cell foam sheets. Door sound insulators were retained just not pictured.

I also stuffed the subwoofer enclose with polyfill from an old jacket i never use.

I still was not satisfied with the lower frequencies and feel the sub bass needed to be better.

Then I tried to change the speakers with the set from trailgridpro.com
All I can say is that kit needs help and is not a direct plug and play.
I had changed out the screws and nuts as someone else did for the dash speakers. The brackets for the door speakers were not lined with foam on the rear so after being bolted there was gap between the metal and brackets. I lined the bracket with some closed cell foam strips to seal. Also lined the cutout for the speaker wire to seal also. Also the harness adapter needed to be isolated with foam to stop vibration. Another thing is that dielectric grease needs to be used cause the speaker terminals will be exposed to water. Closed cell foam rings were added to seal against the door panel.

After the install the system did not sound right as it sounded harsh on the high-end and missing alot of midrange. It is due to the fact that the alpine dash and hatch speakers does not produce the correct range of frequencies at the right level. I believe its cause the speakers is smaller than the factory. So I replaced the dash and rear hatch speakers back to factory and it was much better.

The sub frequencies still sucked. After much research I had got the beatsonic encore x even though it says it does not work with JBL systems.

How the audio system works is that the signal from the audio unit is sent to the JBL amp from only the front. The JBL amp then sends the signals where it needs to go. So the Beatsonic DSP will only work with ch1 and ch2. You would need to zero out the time alignment as its done through the JBL amp. You only use this to make the eq curve better. You can not boost it too much or the signal will distort. You should always cut. I installed the DSP under the center console and routed the harness to the audio unit. I routed the USB cable to the passenger side and can easily hide or access it from the under panel on the drivers side.

Tuning is subjective and I used pink noise to get a base line and adjust by ear after. The settings on the audio unit i have it centered for the low mid and high. The fader I have it set to 1 click back for better surround. Don't waste your money on the beatsonic alpha and guess and pray for it to sound decent. One might be able to just get the DSP and tune for a decent output. The stock speakers are decent but not the greatest. If anyone does go this route let me know how it is compared to without the DSP.

That is a shame to hear about the TrailGrid kit. Was on my radar as a possible upgrade chance for factor JBL speakers. This is a great write up though.

My whole project made a remarkable difference. You have to keep the fader centered for the bass to work properly. I’m am thinking about cutting a hole in the sub enclosure. I think I can access thru the jack tool cubbie. I also cut the carpet under the drivers seat to let the amp breathe. I have no rattling and the rearview mirror shakes like crazy when the bass hits. My main goal was sound quality.

Wow! That looks like a ton of work! I hope you get paid to do this for a living. I'm pretty okay with the stock JBL setup that came in the TRD Pro. Sure, the subwoofer doesn't exactly shake the neighborhood, but I'm okay with that.

Man yeah this is a bummer to hear, I already purchased the kit and it will be arriving this week. I am upgrading from the base sound system though so maybe it will be worth it?

I’m just fine with the JBL system that came with my ORP.

If you want sound quality the DSP is the way to go. But if it sounds good to you now thats fine. I have seen your thread and commend you for what you have done as its a very long process which takes much effort!

Thanks for such a thorough write-up with photos to illustrate!

I did this same project - just not quite to the level of detail that you did on the soundproofing and final tune tweaking.

I have the JBL 12 speaker amplified system. (Actually 14 speakers… the number 12 does not include the subwoofer and the removable “pill” speaker in the middle of the dash.)

I installed SoundSkins sound insulation in all 4 doors + rear hatch ($350), the Trail Grid Pro Alpine 12 speaker kit ($765), and the Beat-Sonic ENA-3T3 Encore “amplifier” ($350).

Mine is a Pro so it already has different window glass and a pretty quiet interior.

I made sure to add sound insulation within the cavity of each door in addition to the interior facing sheet metal that the door panel mounts to.

My conclusions…
The original system was maybe a 7 out of 10 on my highly technical ear rating scale. Now it’s maybe an 8 or 8.5. The speakers are a little better than the stock speakers that were removed. The Beat Sonic device just makes it louder sooner as you up the volume dial, but does not do much as far as actually enhancing the sound.

For the cost and time involved, I was mildly disappointed. I wonder how much better the stock speakers would have sounded if I had done just the soundproofing and stopped there. If you are considering doing this, I would say maybe keep your expectations relatively LOW .

My Ram 1500 Rebel pickup truck has a 19-speaker Harmon Kardon system which has a better sound and I have not done anything to it!

Also: Someone on a different thread had mentioned that the JBL subwoofer is only tied into the front channels so that when you are adjusting the fade front and rear, you need to increase the front (not the rear) to increase the subwoofer in the cargo area. I’m not sure if this is true, but maybe tinker with that. Otherwise the subwoofer is practically inaudible!

Although I agree the stock JBL system is not the finest, I find it good. If I could find a fairly simple upgrade I might try it but probably will not put much work into it. Plus mostly I listen to audiobooks, so sound quality is not exactly critical! I appreciate all your work and detailed comments though, it will help if I do decide to improve the system.
