Last I knew Toyota doesn't make the transmissions. I assume they designed it but Aisin makes it. As far as checking the fluid at the dealer, I doubt they would. Since there's no dipstick checking the level is more involved. On my Tundra you have to get it up on a lift, run the engine, wait for the transmission to get to operating temp, and then pull a plug. I doubt that the dealer would check the oil levels on the front and rear diff for that matter.

I'm sure at the factory they just pump a specified amount of fluid into it. Kind of like going to the gas station and pumping 4.3 gallons into the tank every time. Since they can't check to see if the fluid level is correct Toyota counts on the pump reading how much was pumped in correctly. I'm sure, on occasion, there will be a glitch that will cause a transmission to burn up. But that's the price Toyota pays for removing the dipstick. The plus side for them is that they don't have to deal with some fool who puts brake fluid into the tranny.

Just got a call from the dealer, they went through checking the alerts and all 3 alerts had error codes from the transmission.

He explained that Toyota doesn’t allow their dealers to repair individual parts of a transmission so it is sounding like complete replacement of the transmission is where they are headed.

The tech has been working with a Toyota Engineer documenting the case and running additional tests before they make a final verdict so I won’t have a final answer today but not a good thing.

In his words “I’ve been at this Toyota for 15years and I’ve never had to tell someone a repair that drastic with this low of miles”

Seems like the Tacoma Transmission issues may haunt some 4Runners after all!

Alrighty closing out the loop of my issue, and short version is they made a software update, cleared the codes and tested. They kept it 2 days and put about 30mi on it and never triggered the issue again so I picked it up today.

Far reach from replacing the transmission but if that’s all it was and it never happens again I’ll be happy. Felt normal driving home so fingers crossed it was just a bug.

I found the code they used:

try:
value = int("errorCode")
except Exception as e:
if isinstance(e, ValueError):
ignore

95miles on new TH… this happened to me 😡
Glad I didn’t accept Toyotas crappy trade offer… will be taking the TH to the dealership and my GM to go ski… wtf

also, the way it fails… you lose all engine power—scary and frankly dangerous in traffic

How to check the transmission fluid level without a dipstick on the 6g?

Sorry if I missed it but were you able to keep driving it to the dealership or did it just stop and have to get towed? Low tranny fluid is ridiculous by the way; I will be running out and checking both mine IF they even have a dipstick.

I don't know a way..?
You can't, they will have to drain it to check the level. The dealer can't and wont do it unless there is a serious recurring problem/messages that relate to the transmision.

Its not recommended as well since it can cause problem if drained so early in a car

Yes that’s the same answer I got from my dealership. It’s a closed loop system and requires a professional and only when there’s a problem

Yes same as my Tundra was, when it's time for service you have to have a flush/refill done.

The process typically involves locating a specific fill plug on the side or bottom of the transmission, removing it, and checking the fluid level or adding fluid until it begins to overflow.

forgot to add, you have to bring the transmission temp to a specific temp (from cold) to check it correctly.

That doesn't sound too hard?
