So I have had my 2026 SR5 4runner for about a month now. It has snowed a bit and I've had to use my 4wd. I'm not familiar with the specifics of how 4wd hi vs 4wd lo works. Just looking to be educated on the topic so I can understand better which situation calls for what. I came from a subaru wrx that had awd so this is very new to me. Thank you.

read the manual, but then again who does that now a days...

2H (Two-Wheel Drive High): Used for normal pavement driving. Power is sent only to the rear wheels, maximizing fuel efficiency.

4H (Four-Wheel Drive High): Used for slippery surfaces (rain, snow, ice) or light off-roading, such as driving on sand.

Usage: Can generally be engaged while driving below 50–62 mph, depending on the model.

4L (Four-Wheel Drive Low): Used for severe off-roading, steep climbs, deep mud, or heavy snow. This mode provides maximum torque but at low speeds.

Usage: Vehicle must be at a complete stop and in Neutral to engage, usually requiring a push-and-turn action on the selector knob.

------------------------------------

Flashing Indicator: The 4WD indicator light will blink while the system is engaging and stay on once fully engaged.

4L Signage: When 4L is active, specific 4LO lights will turn on, and in some models, VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) off lights will appear.

------------------------------------

How to Engage (Part-Time):
To 4H: Turn the knob to 4H while moving straight at low speed.
To 4L: Stop fully, put the transmission in Neutral, and push/turn the knob to 4L.

Part-Time 4WD: Commonly found in Tacoma, 4Runner, and Tundra. You select 2WD or 4WD (4H/4L). Best for split-use of on-road/off-road.

Full-Time 4WD: Found in Land Cruiser and some 4Runner models. Features a Torsen center differential that splits torque at all times for superior traction on variable surfaces.

------------------------------------

4WD vs. AWD: 4WD (4x4) has a transfer case and 4L for tough off-roading, while AWD is automatic and designed for paved road rain/snow.

Dry Pavement: Do not drive in 4H or 4L on dry, paved roads, as it can cause "binding" and damage to the drivetrain.

Highly recommend google, youtube, claude, etc.

Standard Part-Time 4WD has worked the same way, more or less, for decades, so there are lots of good resources out there. Far more information available to you by doing a simple search than anyone would be willing or able to type out here!

Also recommend brushing up on how differentials work broadly

So @Nodak , I googled our Platinum trims and it came back the Platinum has a full time four wheel drive system. So what happens differently when we use the selector knob and select the 4H position?

It locks the center diff to do a full 50/50 split between front and rear axel. Your model is typically a 60/40 split, favoring the rear.

Good addition to what Nodak pulled from the manual is Toyota recommends driving in 4HI for at least 10 miles each month to keep the gearbox lubed and functioning properly.
I always wonder what % of 4Runner owners actually do this.

I have owned mine since September 2025 and have just over 5,000 miles, but haven't had a chance to take it in the dirt in order to turn 4H on safely.

Is that in the manual?

i was under the impression that putting in 4hi for a few hundred yards once a month is enough to exercise the servo motors that activate the mechanical stuff. They are likely to cease up with non-use.

when you say “gearbox”, do you mean transfer case?

would like to see this referenced in the manual.
Thanks

Yes, transfer case.

It can be a challenge for some I'm sure. I've been able to do it so far but it's been a concerted effort.

I’ve made sure to do it, but it might be easier where I live, up in Montana.
