Hey there. Been a lurker for a while but I finally picked up my third 4Runner today.

My first car was a ‘98 third gen (back before SR5 was the entry level trim, it was just called Base, but I called it the “Unlimited”). It was Taupe with blue-grey trim and I had it (very shittily) painted black. I don’t know why my parents let me do that. I had for it three years and sold it to a coworker who drove it for 12 more.

I traded that for a real black 4th Gen ‘04 Sport Edition that I had for 11 years and it was the best car ever. I had kids so I needed something with more than two rows, so I absorbed a Highlander and a Tahoe.

When we were finally out of the car seat phase, I wanted something cool again. I had always liked the idea and look of the Wrangler and after years of looking at and talking about them, I fell for the “I don’t care if you get a Jeep” trap, and I ordered a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon soft top.

While I enjoyed it and it was super fun to take the top off on a nice day, it was definitely not as practical or safe as any other car I’ve owned. I was lucky and didn’t have any mechanical problems with it except the Engine Start Stop not working for a while.

Eventually, my wife told me, “I just hate it more than I thought I would,” lol. Game over. Also, a four year old Jeep out of warranty was making me nervous too, as I knew eventually my luck would run out.

But now I’m stoked to be back in my third 4Runner. After only 3 weeks, I picked up my SR5 4WD today from Panama City Toyota. They found me one with a third row and got the TRD Off Road wheel and tire upgrade and the TRD running boards to complete the look. My salesman, Doug, was great to work with.

Please feel free to send me any advice or things to look for now that I’m back in the fold. Thanks in advance!

Sharp 6th gen. I never understood the duck deal with the Jeeps. Made it seem like soccer moms had taken over.

Welcome, you'll enjoy your new ride.

I think the Jeep Duck thing started with a girl having cancer and it was suppose to show support but I doubt most know that and it has gotten out of hand. When I see a Jeep coming toward me with the dash lined up I always hope it's a girl driving, unfortunately most times it's not... :)

I would like to state that I did not participate in the duck thing!

Great topic of conversation. I've been driving Jeep Wranglers since 1998. Only two that whole time, a 2 door TJ and a 4 door JK. So clearly they were well taken care of.
Lifted the JK, added armor, steel bumpers, a winch and of course tires that maxed out the limit of the gearing. (And many many more little personal touches)

That JK was my baby! And she cost me as much as a child in militance and repairs. Do you know how much it costs to correctly and permanently fix the dreaded Jeep Death Wobble?? I had 3/4 of the dash filled with ducks - never bought one. It was always cool to come back to the Jeep and find a new duck on the door handle.

Needless to say I LOVED my Jeeps... And here I am in the 4Runner forum.

After 13 years of daily driving my JK it was time for something new. Started looking around and Damn if Jeep didn't just price themselves out of the running! Anything worth driving off the lot was just too expensive. Same with the Broncos.
So I shifted my search parameters to "Off Road Capable - Reliable" Guess what ALWAYS came out on top? Yep, here I am.

I did some research and found the sweet spot for me. TRD Off Road trim level. It was a HUGE leap forward in terms of technology and comfort. MY JK was a built up base model Sport. I was still shifting gears and manually cranking windows.
Now I have Car Play, heated seats, a factory backup camera and *gasp* a heated steering wheel. (who Knew how nice that thing would be?)
I still love my Jeeps, but after driving the 4Runner since Jan. I keep asking myself "How did I bounce around in that thing for so long?" The more I drive the Toyota the more impressed I am.

The hardest part of the transition? Remembering to NOT wave at the oncoming Jeeps. HA!

I have almost waved at 3 Jeeps so far today. My ‘22 Rubicon had almost all those options and one I didn’t realize I would be missing out on: a garage door opener! How does even an SR5 not have a garage door opener? That’s my only disappointment so far.

AGREE! In my JK I made my own. I opened up a garage door remote, soldered wires to the switch contacts, popped off the plastic trim piece above the rear view mirror, drilled a hole in in and installed a low profile button with the wires behind the plastic. Popped the trim piece back in place and BOOM instant built in garage door opener!
I can't believe a vehicle with a heated steering wheel doesn't have a garage door opener included.
