Filling gas shuts off with 2-3 gal additional

With my 2025 TRD pro, when I fill up the gas, it shuts off. And then I can dribble in an additional 2-3 gallons. When I fill, I set the lock on the slowest locked setting. That extra 40-60 miles makes a difference. Anyone else, any remedy?

I had a similar, but not exact, problem with a 2020 Tacoma I previously owned. The filler would shut off shortly after I started pumping even when the tank was almost empty. As per usual, when I reported the problem to the dealer, they could not replicate it. I solved the problem by turning the filler nozzle 180 degrees, reversing the fillers normal position, and that seemed to solve the problem.

These are the words that every OEM puts in their manual and every fuel pump has posted multiple locations for decades. They do this because there is no set fuel level, pressure or pressure sensing hole location that could be relied upon universally for every nozzle and every vehicle. And consider what the alternative instructors would be, how tedious, vague, unreliable they would be. Put in two more gallons, try putting more fuel in multiple times but no more than three, try four more times, etc. The existing instruction is a CYA thst ensures no fuel is spilt and the EVAP system isn't ever risked, not a way to ensure the tank is filled to full.

They 're pretty sensitive and will click the pump off if not pushed in all the way.
I've seen people struggling with these at costco, disrupting the flow of the line.

you are critically low on gas.

put in 5 gallons and be somewhat close to a gas
pump and fill it up to first click. how much gas went in from bone-dry ?

I've seen people struggling with these at costco, disrupting the flow of the line.

I was wondering if this contributes as well. I fill up at a shell that’s technically on a nearby reservation, and it is the old-school style, no capture technology.

I just happened to fill up today when the "miles to go" dropped to zero just before getting to the gas station. It took 16.28 gallons at first shut-off (which I always stop at), miles on that tank was 385. That all seems to match the 2-3 gallons left on "empty" I always have heard and go by. I have also always heard the "do not top off" directions and follow that. Although more range is nice, to me it is not that big of a deal. I know if I really needed it I could use an extra gallon or 2 after "empty" but planning ahead is a better strategy. If, on a rare occasion, you really *need* the extra range, carry a filled gas can.

I'd rather not risk the vapor-recovery/evaporative-emissions system.


Adding more fuel can force liquid gasoline into the charcoal canister and vapor lines, which are meant for fuel vapor—not liquid. That can cause:

• Fuel spills or expansion overflow, especially in heat
• Gasoline odors and emissions
• A check-engine light or damaged EVAP components
• In some cases, poorer refueling behavior later

The simplest rule: stop at the first automatic shutoff.

ive made up my mind just like everyone else has.

and extra 1-2 gallons isnt going to make a difference to me, so what if i get any extra 20-40 miles a tank.

in the grand scheme of things, our winters dictate i wont go below 1/3 or 1/2 tank for safety concerns in case i get stuck during cold season and i have to wait 2-3 hrs for a rescue. that reserve is to let me be casual about keeping warm until help arrives.

the wife is even worse, 1/2 tank and it gets filled whether its summer or winter. it drives her nuts if i let it go below 1/2 no matter the vehicle.

I think the hybrid model might be a little bit different if you run out of fuel!

My old girlfriend and I about 40 years ago did just that on a road trip. The needle was so far at the bottom it wouldn't go any lower, and the car kept running so the next gas station we just said screw it! and filled it up.
