Ok so reading this I ran out and looked at mine. These pics are me in from the front the 4Runner looking back. Mine would be on backwards also? Both feel like the lip is in the front and the smooth ends are in the back

According to Toyota, that's the correct way. Check the sticker under the plastic cap on the mounting foot. My intuition tells me the smooth/round edge would be the front, but Toyota must know better than me.

I definitely had wind noise coming from my OEM cross bars at highway speeds. I took mine off after ~900 miles and the vehicle became much quieter. I then changed the tires from the stock Michelins (ORP Premium Hybrid) to Nitto Terra Grappler G3 tires (33”) and it became even quieter. I don’t expect the 4Runner to be near-silent like a Lexus sedan, but I believe I still have noise coming from the A-pillars at highway speeds.

Extra thoughts (not related to noise): Overall, I’m very happy with my 6th Gen, along with my post-purchase upgrades and other personalizations. My biggest functional changes have been the Westcott lift (2.5” front, 0.75” rear) and the larger Nitto tires wrapped on TRD Pro rims. These two changes alone made the vehicle drive better (and I think the appearance is transformed, too). I haven’t done any significant off-roading (yet), but expect it will be up to anything I’m interested in doing as a hiker and mountain biker…
Any pics when you get a chance ?

Now I have to go look again... did I say this all backwards???
it does look like the word front is on the side with the lip!

.... ok no I said it right the first time. The front is definitely the sharp side without the extra lip on top.

It just looks like a lip in some pics because of the way stuff in the background reflects on the glossy paint.

The end cap covers are directional too, they have a cutout shape that is different on one side to fit the lip. The end cap covers are labelled RH and LH inside and confusingly LH is the passenger side, so it's relative to facing the truck rather than riding in it.

So I did come across that sticker when I took the covers off to adjust the spacing. They're installed with the "Front" sticker facing the front, but it still doesn't make sense to me that the side with the less aerodynamic "lip" would somehow be the front.
The front sticker is not on the side with the lip.

It is upside down if you are facing forward like if you were riding in the vehicle which is confusing. But the LH / RH labels for the end caps are also "backwards" the same way. You have to be facing the front of the truck rather than riding in it for LH to be on the left (passenger side), and if you are facing the truck like that, the the word front is right-side up and is facing you and facing the front of the truck. So that's consistent.

Regardless of which way up the writing is, the sticker itself is clearly on one side, and so you just make that side the front, and that is the smooth side not the lip side.

Then again... even more confusingly, since only one bar has the front sticker, maybe it just means that is the front bar. 🤔 how the heck do they make something so simple so unclear?

The beveled/smooth/rounded sides on the ones I installed face front on the front rail and rear on the back rail - with the notch/lip sides facing each other. I recall being a bit confused when I installed them but it all made sense in the end. Wish I had the instructions to share but apparently I only had the hard copy that came with them and that is not available to me right now. (I don't think the allen wrench that came with the bars is very critical - its a standard size wrench (5 mm?) with a funky torque indicator that I was not clear how to use. I made things tight but not too tight. Note that I lost one of the 4 cross-bar end covers so make sure that they are snapped on tight. Replacements only sold in as all 4 together. $35 lesson.

Watch the video I posted

Video shows them installed both ways at different times.

Initially the lip is in front, then at the end you have the lip in back. (as far as one can tell, since the video does not actually show this clearly)

Along the way you say "I tried it both ways and in the end I just installed them according to the directions." Well that is super useful. The directions do not say. The only pictures that show the front sticker are zoomed in enough that it does not show which way is the front of the vehicle.

Do you mean the extra directions you had the dealer print? We don't have those and the video does not show them.

So, it's a nice video in most ways, but this whole thread is about a specific question, and the video does not answer it.
