I recently bought rook rack pads for my 6th gen 4Runner. Despite being for aero bars, the pads were too small (couldn’t velcor together). It seems the aero bars on the factory rack are thicker than normal and i would like to know if anyone found something that works? One of the reasons I like the 4Runner is I can lower the back window and Hang a longboard out the back. But for family surf trips, I would like to carry the boards on the roof and therefor need pads for the crossbars that fit.

Hey, I use these Dakine 28" Aero combined with baja straps -no issues so far.

I also have this Dakine tailgate surf pad that works. When I pull it super tight it looks a little wonky but it does the job and makes for storing and removing my boards much quicker.

Highway driven with 70+ speeds using both options - no issues.

What about just using a couple (or so) pool noodles or pipe insulators together to make a larger diameter? A good contact cement should make a pretty permanent bond I would think. You could make it permanent or juts leave one slit open and hold it on when needed with zip ties, duct tape, Velcro straps, or whatever--or maybe even glue Velcro on the open ends.

Or even simpler just a good closed-cell foam sheet wrapped around and held on the same way.

Just thinking there should be plenty of DIY (Redneck?) ways to do this.

Best I’ve had in the last 25 years of surfing have been and still are the full width O’Neil bar pads. Really any reputable brand will be fine such as Dakine, but make sure they are full width (Aka like 2-2.5 ft long
