So I just went to my dealer and am deciding whether to trade my 2023 Tacoma with a 4Runner. We have a 2020 4Runner TRD ORP at home, but I want another Runner.

Anyway, just wondering if there is any news about "exploding" engines like that of the Tundra ?

I am itching to get a new 4Runner, but I'm nervous because it's still new. I have never had any issues with our current Toyota's...

Thank you

I haven’t heard anything. The engine in mine (non-hybrid) is one of the real strengths of the vehicle. Good power, smooth and pretty solid mpg. But who knows what the longevity will be. My guess would be that the engine will hold up if serviced properly.

It’s also an engine that’s been around for a couple years in the Highlander and some Lexus models. Haven’t heard anything bad and like anything else just stay on regular maintenance and should be good to go.
I made the switch from a 2021 Tacoma and I really like the new 4R.

there's probably more than a million of our motor running around havn't heard of any issues. The tacoma did have a tranny issue when it first came out but I havn't heard much on it in a while. Mine has 14k miles on it and is running like a dream.

Over 12,000 miles so far on my ORP Hybrid, no issues at all (aside from that minor brake squeal, which was fixed under warranty). Some light off-roading, mostly highway.

Only problem I have is first thing in the morning and after sitting at work for 8 hrs , putting it in drive or reverse the rpm drop lower the. It should has not stored out, but the lights would dim in the morning.
But not a big problem yet.

10k ORP hybrid and runs like my three previous V6 4R's should have. Much better power and better MPG to boot

in the grand scheme of things on the new tundra the actual failure rate of the new engine is roughly 1-2% of total production. granted it sucks if its you that it happens to but the odds are within norm not just for toyota but for any of the big 3 domestics.

for the tacoma the trans failure rate was even lower

571k so far produced
i have a 23 tundra with 20k miles (and is 9th on the list for a full long block replacement), still going fine but i am doing 5k oil changes (now 4k) and i did the first at 1200 miles. it sits outside 24/365 and deals with ND brutal winters.
