Hey everyone!

Current owner of a 5th gen Limited (just hit 250k miles on her) and owned several other 4runners in past. For the past year I've been pondering upgrading to a modern platform. Like many of you, this has come down to the LC and the 4R. This is mostly be a pavement princess, so for me I'm looking either the Platinum trim 4R or a LC Premium.

Curious question for those of you that purchased a 6th Gen hybrid is what was what made you pick it over the LC?

I drove a LC last year and loved it, back in April my local dealer has a hybrid limited on the lot, I was first person that test drove it and something just seemed off, when you pressed the gas pedal, there was a odd feeling, it wasn't smooth, the power was great but there was this weird feeling you got from the pedal. I not know to explain exactly what I felt, but I didn't recall feeling that last year when I drove the LC. Fast forward to last week, same dealer had another limited hybrid and a couple LC's so I made arrangements to go drive them back to back. This 4runner had about 200miles on it so it was a little more broken in but it had the exact same feeling in the pedal, so I assume this is just the way these are. Drove the LC right afterwards and it did not have this feeling. I want to want the 4runner more than the LC but I don't know if this will bother me long term. There are also little things with LC that don't make sense to me. Given that I'd be looking for a Black Platinum trim 4R which is almost non-exist, I've decided I'll likely just wait until the 26MY trucks start coming it to get one.

Curious if anyone else knows what I'm talking about with the feeling in the pedal? Feel free to share any thoughts on why you picked the 4R over a LC!

I have an Off Road Premium, and I waffled back and forth on the Land Cruiser a lot. The way I looked at:

1. The ORP is $60k, has part time 4wd, the big screen, air conditioned seats, yadda yadda
2. The LC 1958 is $57k, but is cloth and has the small screen, but is full time 4wd. I really don't know who this car is for
3. The regular LC is $62k and is completely comparable to the ORP 4Runner, and for 2k you get a different style (very personal choice), full time 4wd, and thats about it
4. A Premium pack LC is $68k, and personally I think is too close in price to the GX and too far in price from the 4R to cross shop them

I went back and forth on the ORP 4R and the Regular LC, and I went with the 4R over the LC just for styling purposes. If the rear window rolled down in a LC, I would probably have that instead.

I think by the time you're looking at these trucks, you're not really planning on going rock crawling for a living, and if thats the case while the 4R is a great road car, I think the LC is even better. It sits lower, has more interior volume, and has a styling design that is more inline with a street car. Ppl are gonna hate on that, but most ppl have these as street cars with dreams of going off road, so get the one that caters to what you're gonna do most of the time. Neither one is bad off-road, so your choice isn't gonna hold you back

All that to say, I drove them all, I didn't feel any difference with the throttle. I would adjust the dash to show the battery capacity, and see if you were driving one w a completely flat nickel pack

I would also say that if you're looking at the

1. $64k Platinum 4R
2. $68k Premium LC

then you should also be looking at the

3. $66k GX550 Premium

The styling is a choice, and the biggest complaint ppl have about the lower trim GXs is that they don't have the sway bar disconnects available on the LC/4R OR the eKDSS of the Overtrail GX. But if you're sticking to the parking lot, who cares?

4runner looks better, IMO
LC rear glass does not roll down
4runner entertainment screen is much larger screen

I prefer the air vents of the LC
LC has a better console setup. Cup holders are in a better location.

I went back and forth between the 2. I found that the trailhunter particularly has more features and edges in the specs for off-road over the LC.
LC is supposed to be more luxurious, historically, but seems to have shifted now.

I think Ive read somewhere the $runner top 3 trims have a heavier built more durable front end or half shaft in the front axle.

Toyota Parts shows the same part number for a Trailhunter front driveshaft as for a TRD OR. Says it's for 3 models and 21 variants

I have the opposite experience when driving the LC and 4runner. I drove a OF platinum 1st, throttle was responsive and had a lot of zip. Steering was tight and little roll when cornering at speed compared to my daughters Gen5 4runner on my spin around the feeder and freeway. Got in the premium LC and immediately felt the difference in steering from 4runner. Throttle response was sluggish compared to the OF Premium and even my daughters Gen5. Cornering felt squishy compared to the 4runner even felt more roll. It was like a bad set of AT tires on the LC made it soft when turning felt like a top heavy ride compared to the 4runner. Even the interior of the 4runner i will take over the LC it was just lacking for the price.

I went with the new Platinum trim. I didn't notice any significant throttle bugs. I have been driving 4Runners since 1988, so I am biased towards them. However, I have always respected the old Land Cruiser, so when they made their return from the grave, I was not adverse to comparing a LC250 to a new 4Runner.

I concluded the Land Cruiser was too boxy for my needs. It wasn't the look of the box; it was its aerodynamics. The windshield is relatively straight-up, and the 4Runner has much more of a slanted windshield. The effect of this design is wind noise on the highway. In the LC you can feel the buffering and hear it. The 4Runner avoids this by having the wind more contoured to the windshield design.

Finally, while both vehicles are made in Japan, one of them is built in the most excellent auto plant in the world, and the other is not.

Having said all that, the new Platinum is the best 4Runner I have owned. You will get a black Platinum; there are many coming at this moment. Be patient, be strong. It is worth the wait.

Both the 4R and the LC have always bee dream vehicles for me. My wife and I test drove the LC 1958, and we just didn’t like the experience. When we got into the 4R TRD ORP, it just felt better all the way around. It felt I was about to tip over at anytime in the LC which I attribute to the boxiness, and the ride was rough. Some of that may have been due to overinflated tires and/or more stop and go traffic for the test drive. We felt “at home” in the 4R, and the ride was smooth. We opted for the TRD ORP non-hybrid.

Did you try the different driving modes. The local dealers haven't had a 4Runner to try so I haven't but I would try driving in sport and tow modes to see if it feels better.

Good luck finding any non-1958 LC under 70k. There wasn’t one within 500m of me. And there certainly wasn’t any gx550 under 75k.
This!!!! I was waiting on the release of the Land Cruiser like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. “It’s gonna be cheaper than the Land Cruisers of the past” That was a crock of 5hit. I’m happy with the new 4Runner. The handling has always been an issue with 4Runners. The power has always been lacking. It has kept me from buying one. The new 4Runner delivers in my opinion

Yes I did try all the driving modes and the feeling was there in all of them on both the limited I drove last week and the one in April.

First of all, congrats on being one of the first with a Platinum! They are few and far between!

LC's are built at two different plants, Tahara Plant and Hamura Plant. You have to pay attention on the sticker to see which plant a LC was produced in, but seems like both are producing excellent LC's!

Its such a struggle for me to decide. There are pros/cons for each, I want to want the 4runner over the LC but just from a driving perspective of the two LC's and two 4R Limited's I've had the chance to drive, I do prefer the LC. My main issues with the LC is lack of storage space for stuff up front in cabin, don't love the smaller gas tank and prem gas requirement. The Platinum def gets points for a nicer interior and I do like the bigger screen and fact it has additional drive modes including the custom one vs the 3 modes that come on the LC. I wish it had a unique interior vs being basically the same as the Tacoma.

Good news is I'm not in a hurry, and there is no timeline I'm following, I will likely end up with a black platinum at some point if i had to guess :)
