If I am running the AC and then turn the car off, when I get back in the car and start it up again the AC is on (i can feel the super cold air blowing) but the light on the dash is not. It will stay like this the whole drive. If I then hit the button to turn the AC on the light will come on, if I then hit it again to turn the AC off the light goes off and the AC finally goes off. Anyone else noticing this?

Yep exact same thing. The manual said something like the AC is always on when the ambient temperature is above 75°. I assumed it was just a quirk.

AHH, interesting. Well that would explain it. But still strange. it should turn the AC light on whenever its automatically turned on because of temp.

There is a setting on in the menu on the radio like under vehicle settings you can turn ac on so that everytime you turn the car on the ac is on. I had to do it on mine and also our 25 Camry

I am positive that when I turn my AC off (when opening all the windows to enjoy nice temps outside) that it stays off - I need to turn it on the next time I start if I want AC/heat.
But I wanted to find the setting so searched the multimedia manual and cannot find such a setting. Can anyone point to the section/page in the manual where this is described? Thanks

This is what I turned off so that the button stays on or off depending on what I did pressed last.

This is a Toyota quirk I guess and is correctable the settings. I live in south Florida and the A/C stays on all the time, so this never bothered me.

Thanks!
I missed the footnote in section 2.2, p. 55 of the multimedia manual: "Vehicle customize (1)... (1)refer to vehicle "OWNER'S MANUAL". D'OH.

In Owner's Manual its in section 8.2 Customization in the table of "Customizable Features." labeled "Automatic air conditioning system". Default is on.

The nuance of which manual has the details on different features and functions is .... interesting. Not saying it does not make sense but you must often look in both places.

And I still cannot find where it indicates that this setting affects what happens after you turn vehicle off and on again. One could interpret it as meaning that when you hit the "auto" button to have the climate control "thermostat" function that it automatically turns on the AC. It's ambiguous.

Will try to remember to check what mine is set to, but am almost certain I did not change the default and am positive that it "remembers" whether auto was on when I turn the car off... So I guess I'm still not sure.

I will note the following (Sec 5-1; page 452 of my hybrid manual):
" Using automatic mode:
1 Press the “AUTO” switch.
2 Adjust the temperature setting.
3 To stop the operation, press the “OFF” switch.
If the fan speed setting or air flow modes are operated, the automatic mode indicator goes off. However, automatic mode for functions other than that operated is maintained."

Bottom line: Thanks very much for showing the control that I failed to find. And I'm still a bit confused...

However, I suspect that the issue for the original poster is simply that the light is not on - and that is explained if they changed air speed or flow mode (per the last manual quote above).

I don't see it fully explained here quite this way, but that "A/C mode with auto" means that, if you have the fan set to auto, the a/c will run if you set a temperature lower than the detected inside temp. It is for more fully automatic temperature regulation (it cools and/or heats as needed to maintain what you set). I prefer to manually set my a/c, and just either take it off auto and set temperature appropriately. If I want just outdoor ambient temperature to come in, I just make sure the temp is set below the outdoor temp--and I have that auto setting off. I would not call this a quirk, just an intentional design choice. That auto setting is remembered--I do not recall if it is driver-specific, but the manual does specify if it is.

that setting only is valid if you push the auto button and let the system decide on how to cool/heat or vent the airflow.

its explained in the manual, but thenagain most people rather not read the manual.

has no bearing on other settings inherent to the hvac system.

1. a/c will kick on if you use any setting that involves the front windshield
2. use auto mode

and yes i do read the manual even before i get a new vehicle. things change from MY to MY and generations.

i've read the 25 manual several times and find new things, but i suspect most people rather do up a post and wait for an answer. i keep a pdf of the manual, and the multimedia manual and maintenance manual. easier to do a search for what i am looking for

each person is different i guess :)
