Looking to change the oil on my transfer case. Last week I changed the front and rear differential and used GL-5 75w-90 I know the Toyota manual says to use GL-4 for the transfer case but I don’t want to use Toyota brand because it is expensive. Which brand did you use? I’ve heard some people say to just use 75W 90 GL-5 but I’ve heard that’s bad for the transfer case. If anyone knows what Carcarenut recommends that would be helpful too I’ve struggled to find the video he talks about it 😓

I don't know what cost has to do with choosing a GL-5 over a GL-4 or not using Toyota fluids. I'd recommend a economical, if your price conscious, GL-4 over a cheap GL-5. Mobil 1 for example, about $20/quart.

TCCN says to use 75W-90 in your transfer case...the same as your front and rear differential.

I've yet to find a dealership that even stocks the OEM 75W...they put 75-90W in everything. People get wrapped around the axle about this topic...there are millions of Toyota trucks on the road with 75-90W in the Tcase (including mine), doing just fine.

Should’ve made that more seperate. Price has nothing to do with GL5 vs 4. The GL4 Toyota fluid is significantly more expensive than GL4 redline for example is what I was more of referencing.

Toyota guy always recommends follow the manufacturer's recommendation. The motor oil geek, Speed, took his truck back to the dealer. Said he wanted them to change it for warranty purposes, especially after seeing the contamination others found. There are videos of owners finding machining chips in all the drive components on the web. Sad but true.

I find it ironic that someone named Yotamerchant doesn't want to use Toyota fluid because it's "expensive". I'm done with the internet for today:)

Got it. I use Schaeffer's 75W90 GL-5 in the differentials in my Ram, I see no reason not to use it in the 4Runner. About $20 a quart.

What does my username being Yota Merchant have to do with me not wanting to spend a lot of money on OEM fluid ?
