Toyota has a "bulletin" out on this front break squeal (in reverse). I took my vehicle to the dealer and they diagnosed the squeal, and approved the replacement of the pads, rotors and shims, under warranty.
I'm a bit puzzled. The TSB-0006-26 pertains to the 6th generation 4Runners from 2025 and 2026. However, your profile indicates that you own a 5th generation 4Runner. Was that model also part of the recall?

I still don’t see where his rotors got replaced….. the list provided of what the dealer did shows no rotors. The tsb doesn’t show rotors.. I mean shit if you got them replaced good but they aren’t doing it cause of the tsb.

Only about 800+ miles on my 6Gen. So far, haven't heard any brake squeal. But I'll keep my ears tuned in for it and keep TSB-0006-26 in mind if it does occur.

My brakes started squealing at 500 miles, now at 2400 miles and still have noise intermittently when backing up. Dealer wants me to leave it with them until they hear the noise. Ain't happening. Who knows how long it would be there until noise returns, and me left to hoof it without a loaner vehicle. Thanks Quality Control at Toyota!

Think about how many vehicles are affected. They have a tsb for every one of their vehicles on the tnga-f platform except the tacoma.. not sure how the Tacoma got out of not having brake squeals. But don’t expect any real legit day one fixes from Toyota until do a refresh or redesign. The tundra hasn’t even been fitted with day one fix and still use tsbs to address the squealing and they have had the issue since like 2022

It's a supplier issue I'm guessing.

The brake sub assembly arrives pre-assembled to the Toyota factory and they just slap it in on the line.

The problem likely was Advics or whoever had an issue with bad brake pads, or didn't properly shim and grease the assemblies before delivery.

I don’t think so. It’s probably about money. The tundra since 2022 has had the issue, when do you think they would learn to start applying grease? Rotors cost more money than pads. It’s simple. It would cost Toyota millions of dollars to probably just change out the rotors being put on factory assembled vehicles. Since not everyone is having a problem it’s cheaper to get their pads replaced for a few year and then eventually add rotors to the tsb and maybe even by that time a refresh comes out and it’s fixed. Just follow the tundra again, it’s been on the new platform years longer than 4Runner and it has the same problem with brakes even today.

Toyota doesn't make brake pads, discs, fluid, or calipers.

They are procured from 3rd party companies like Denso, Advics, Aisin, Hitachi, Tokico, Stanley Electric, etc.

Same with the German cars, who buy sub assemblies in from companies like Brose, Webasto, Continental VDO, Bosch, etc.

My former BMW had 14.1" front brakes with 4 piston calipers and semi metallic pads; when I changed them out due to wear induced squealing I made sure to reassemble with proper methods and grease on every metal surface that touches. No squeal thereafter!

You might be right that its cost cutting with inferior pad material or discs, but I doubt this is the case given its safety concerns.

I think the blame is on Aisin or Advics, and less so on Toyota.

Toyota has to warranty it, but I'm sure they file subrogate against their suppliers for the bill.

I don't see a reply from the original poster. Highly suspect information.

I will start take a video reversing out of garage to capture the squeal. I would hope that is enough to satisfy the dealer to do the TSB. I will NOT leave it with them. They need to trust the customer!

I really don't want the dealer doing anything as it can lead to other issue through crappy work.

I back into my garage and have never had a noise problem when pulling out. But, if I did back out one day and I heard the noise, I'd personally buy the parts listed in the TSB and install them myself. My 4Runner will never go to a dealership for any work unless it's something major/expensive, and I'm incapable of fixing myself.

My only issue with the whole thing is not alerting customers before purchasing this could be an issue. Had I know ahead of time I might have held off buying one. Theres no way Toyota didn’t know about this before hand. Since they don’t deem it a a safety……
