Physically pushing your 6th gen 4Runner

Hello all, the other day I was trying to push my 6G just a few feet to have a little extra room to get underneath.
I did not want to start it up because I was in my garage at night and did not want to breathe fumes.

I could not get it into neutral or release the parking brake that goes on automatically.

So I resorted to trying to find a good explanation on the internet and was able to get it into neutral. But the parking brake would not release!

So forward thinking,

if I were to be in the outback somewhere and I needed to get my 4Runner in neutral with parking brake off, how is this going to be done if the engine can't start but have power?
Any thoughts?

Why do you think that starting the vehicle and moving it a couple feet would create enough fumes to be an issue? It would be on for a few seconds at most.

Why are you questioning why the OP doesn't want to breathe in exhaust fumes in his garage? That's his choice and you are free to breathe away with no judgement.

I get all of that, to simplify let's say you just want to put your car in a neutral without starting the engine or having the emergency brake stay on.

There's got to be a way to do this by just having power on; not the engine on and not pushing the little emergency plunger that is next to the shift lever. I hope this is making sense.

For another way to look at this, say I wanted to tow my 4runner behind an RV! I know not recommended, but you see where I'm going with this question. Preferably getting it in neutral just by using the accessory ON button and shifting to neutral without having the emergency brake kick in .

Okay amazing! That worked.

Quick recap I put vehicle into ACC mode.
Did not start engine.

Put foot on brake pedal and was able to release parking brake.

Then shifted into neutral with foot on brake pedal..

Could have swore I did that before but it seems I did not have my foot on the brake pedal so The automatic parking brake Never released. A little screwy for me but it seems to be working now if I follow that specific procedure.. I can actually push my car now.

OK, a question along a similar line. If your 4 runner dies in traffic and the battery is dead, how do you get it in neutral so you can push it out of traffic.

Great question! I have toyed with that question many times because in the past with very simple Vehicles it was very easy to put it in neutral and just push it.

But with these new electronically controlled vehicles, and it's not just for runners.
You have to be cognizant on how to get your car into neutral.
So that is what spawned my post.

But to answer your question if you were to have an engine die and have no power. Having no power is fairly odd because you would still have some power to at least operate your ACC functions, But if you don't, there is a little tab next to the shift lever that is removable, you would press down with a chopstick or something long that can disengage your transmission into neutral.

Most cars have had that, in the past especially 4runners.
I believe the manual has that listed. Hope this helps

Also page 228 of the manual explains how to turn Off the automatic parking brake mode which I found annoying and not necessary in most situations. Also a bit problematic in the winter.

Toyota recommends turning off the parking brake in the winter to prevent freeze up .
