Also page 228 of the manual explains how to turn Off the automatic parking brake mode which I found annoying and not necessary in most situations. Also a bit problematic in the winter.
Thanks for that info, I was looking for that.

Although I suppose freeze-up could be a problem with the parking brake, I never trust just the transmission to hold the vehicle in place. And, growing up in New England, my parents always used the parking brake and, as far as I know, never had a problem releasing it.

Towing: This vehicle cannot be flat-towed (that is, with all 4 wheels on the ground). In fact, it cannot be towed with any wheels on the ground, only on a full trailer. Pushing a few feet is one thing, but if you try towing it you will probably destroy something (otherwise they would say you could do it).

with the limited and platinum FT4WD you have to trailer it.

but also the PKSB will engage everytime you put the vehicle in park (unless you turn it off via the MID screen)

Using the parking brake is a good idea as it prevents the vehicle from rolling when you take your foot off the brake pedal and allowing all of the weight of the vehicle to roll and rest on the transmission parking pawl. Especially on a hill or incline.

Why are you questioning why the OP doesn't want to breathe in exhaust fumes in his garage? That's his choice and you are free to breathe away with no judgement.
Haha! Try staying in the garage when the 65’ Mustang is being started every month during the winter. Sounds amazing but makes you appreciate the 4 Runner’s exhaust.

Toyota recommends turning off the parking brake in the winter to prevent freeze up .
That's kind of amazing. If you need a parking brake don't you need it all year? If you don't need it in winter, is it needed at all? Legal requirement?

Funny that this thread moved to parking brakes1 Parking brakes are a secondary safety. Yes, an automatic transmission locks, but it can fail. I know at least one case where a person was killed because of this. In that case there was a recall for the transmission lock that had not been repaired in that vehicle. The vehicle was parked at the top of a hill (driveway I believe) and the transmission came out of park, the vehicle rolled down the hill, and crushed the owner. Very sad, and *very* unlucky that this all happened exactly that way. But, having the parking brake set would have prevented the accident. I am from manual transmission days where the parking brake was the only thing really holding the vehicle when parked (putting it in reverse gave a lot of drag, but would not lock it in place).

In the case where it could freeze in place, then of course that may override other concerns--but I would never do this if the vehicle is on any significant hill.
