Can you disable blue tooth, plug into USB and choose use as car play?
@Boobajoob OMG, genius! LOL

The key was I had to turn my phone bluetooth off before turning on my 4Runner. Then, connected the USB-C cable to the side of the screen. I could then play audio from my phone through the USB-C cable. Then, I went to the "devices" menu and turned on Apple Car Play and it worked! Thank you!

Now we await @elecfuyu's visit to the dealership to try and figure out why the subwoofer is basically non-existent…

A quick update of what I currently find.

When set fader all the way to rear, I don't hear any bass until volume around 45-50.

When fader set to middle:
Spotify (basic, no subscription) - sounds terrible, very flat, with bass only start to be visible around volume 35
Youtube music with Premium - much better than Spotify basic, I can start hearing bass at around volume 24 - 30
Apple music (with stored filed on phone not streaming) - sounds best out of the three at same volume.

Test condition: all three source listened within 10 min and switching directing from each other through wireless apple-carply.
Test music: Eminem - Loose Yourself

Source seems to be very important here.
I'm sure Spotify with Premium will sound similar or equal to Youtube Music premium.

Spotify basic: Audio Quality: Lower quality (128-160kbps)
Spotify Premium: High-Quality Audio: up to 320kbps on desktop/mobile.
Youtube Music Premium: Audio Quality: Up to 256kbps.
Apple Music: Hi-Res Lossless: Up to 24-bit/192 kHz (highest quality)

Keep in mind only Apple music provides lossless, so it will defenitly sound better than Spotify Premium and Youtube Premium.

Also Youtube Premium only sounds "louder" than Spotify, it doesn't nessesary means it is better quality.

Also I look up the Tacoma has subwoofer at the driver side rear seat, and I realize that my coworker had the seats down for his dog, this may have some effect in more direct bass.

I am starting to think this is normal on our vehicle... but will have dealer check and compare to others anyways.

AI claims that Toyota has the subwoofer driven by the front channel and not by the rear channel, so setting fader to the rear will turn the subwoofer down, according to AI.

I've tried FM radio & Spotify via Bluetooth as that's what I have available to me. Both sources are the same result. It's like only the bass in the rear door speakers and subwoofer have been filtered out even with the infotainment bass setting maxed out. I can't find any other settings that would be causing this issue.

You might want to re-read what I did for testing.

AI doesn't know everything, it hallucinates, and constantly passes along false information as truth. I use it as a tool and not a source of truth. Verify the sources it provides.

I read it. I’ve confirmed on my ORP: lots of bass from speakers and subwoofer via the front channel. Stuck my head in the cargo area and there’s good subwoofer volume. No subwoofer if I set to max rear channel (zero front channel)

I verified on my ORP that AI is correct on this.
