Hybrid vs Gas Long Term Value???

What do you guys think the longterm value is of these new iForce MAX hybrid engines??? Are these going to be worth owning after 10+ years or will they end up like older Priuses and no where to be seen??? I was reading for the average Joe, not garage mechanics, it cost $8k to replace the battery. If an older hybrid needs an engine rebuild and a new battery your cost can be substantial. Wondering if longterm, the hybrids loose tremendous value versus straight gas version of the new 4 cylinder engines.

What are your guys thoughts?

The reasons I purchased the gas only version are mainly two, and both involve the battery and its placement. First, it takes 10 inches off the cargo capacity and makes the floor very high to load. Second, one is not supposed to place anything heavier than 120 lbs. over the battery, which is the floor of the cargo compartment of the truck. This is absolutely unacceptable, and can you imagine if a cooler spills water over the battery while the truck is off roading? A disaster waiting to happen… IMO this hybrid drivetrain is an afterthought and doesn’t make any sense. Same BTW is valid for the Land Cruiser sold in North America with the same drivetrain. So make your conclusions about its practicality and future reliability and value retention..
For Costco runs and taking kids to and back from school the hybrid is fine, but IMO, not for off roading, which is the original purpose of this vehicle.

Toyota has to put clauses in like that for liability purposes but for all practicality you can put quite a bit more in the cargo area. The decreases space back there is true and I feel it when packing that thing full of camping supplies but thw last thing I am thinking about is the weight. I'm also not at all concerned about liquid spilling back there causing a battery fire, imo these are just silly objections. Toyota has been making hybrid systems like this for a very long time and they are considered reliable.

Yep I agree, The way the back seats are designed now and the battery pack raising the rear cargo floor is odd.

I stuck with the standard gas Turbo. I feel that's a pretty simple Powertrain. Looking at it closely the front and rear differential are very easy to do maintenance on as well as the transfer case and transmission. A pretty simple drivetrain as long as Electronics keep going.

I did like the trail Hunter as my first choice but it had the hybrid powertrain which was a complete turnaround for me.
But I'm having a good time with mine so far. It still has very low miles and I'm listening and watching for any abnormalities.

Toyota makes good unibody hybrids, but no body on frame trucks with good hybrid solutions. Look at the absurd placement of the battery in the North American Land Cruiser and the hybrid 4Runner. If this was an original design, the battery should have been placed elsewhere. But as I said above, this is an afterthought to attract certain types of people and please EPA.

I disagree. I generally cost out a vehicle and consider its likely worth in 10 years, sometimes 12 years. That get you the total cost of ownership. I always keep vehicles at least 10 years, averaging 12 right now. I have one 2005 running strong. So, for me, it's a ig deal if the high cost battery replacement kicks in after 10 years. Equally for a buyer, they will deduct the cost of a new battery from the value when you resell it.

I have a gas only SR5. I am also considering a truck purchase, one being the Tacoma. I have been interested in the Hybrid but have the value concern. Will probably go with a gas only truck. If I was to buy an Electric or Hybrid, I'd have to add in the cost of a replacement battery up front when making the decision. Adding $8-10K puts most hybrid in a difficult place in terms of costs. That and the cost of new vehicles is so inflated but, people keep buying (me included) so they will keep increasing the price.

A buddy bought an old Prius that had no range due to battery degradation. Cost him under $2500 including labor to replace the batteries at the dealer and it's back to full range again. The batteries have a 10 year/100k warranty so pretty far out. I bought the hybrid for pulling a tandem trailer with my SxS at going on 4000 lbs. Night and day over both my 5th gens. I can race people off lights and no more struggle on overpasses and up hills. All depends on what you're using them for.

gas turbo will last longer without a major cost like battery replacement. you'll also be reminded that you bought the significantly less powerful powertrain every time you accelerate from stop. choice was clear for me, I'd rather enjoy the car more now than in 25 years. but that's why they offer both.

Hybrid is almost a full second faster 0-60. It is better in every way except cargo area.

For acceleration the Bronco with the 2.7 V6 turbo is possibly the fastest of the bunch. Not sure about its reliability though. Personally the gas only 4Runner is all I need from an off roader and am completely happy with it.
