The local dealer is 10 miles away. Should I drive or have it towed? I can get there without getting on the freeway.

I've don't even have 2 months of ownership on this ride.

Toyota Care should cover the tow which is probably the safer option. I drove with hazards on cause my dealer was only 2-3 miles away. Depends on your comfort level.

Mine failed after 2 weeks of ownership 🥲

That's scary that they didn't even try to find a cause. What if we are making a turn on a mountain pass and it shuts off and the steering wheel couldn't return back to center...

I know, kinda crazy for a brand that’s known for reliability... I’m always going to be wondering when the next failure will be and if it’ll happen on a road trip or in the mountains.

@a_double any updates from the dealer?

The service manager said they looked at it today, got a foreman involved, whatever that means, hopefully a senior tech, and need it for another day. I asked for scans/diagnostics but he said the tech/foreman hasn’t shared it with him yet.

Hello. New here after picking up my 26 Limited. Following this thread…If I were in your position, I’d have it towed and make a helluva scene of it! Lol, kidding but man, seriously frustrating.

Hybrid or not. Anything can happen to any vehicle as all new gens have kinks. Lastly it wouldn’t hinder me from buying a Hybrid 4Runner.

Update to my issue. The dealer service department found the transmission to be short on fluid, so they topped it off, cleared codes and are driving around town, trying to reproduce the issue. They opened a ticket with TAS as well. TAS mentioned 2 possibilities, transmission and fuel pump. I don't understand how the fuel pump relates but will get more details later. Whole transmission replacement is a possible remedy as well if the codes resurface and suggest tranny problems.

I can't believe this!!!

Does anybody know whether checking the transmission fluid levels is part of the pre-delivery checklist? Either at the port, dealership or elsewhere.

In the 10 years of PDI’s that I did, it was… but those had serviceable transmissions with dipsticks. Can’t speak for every manufacturer or model of vehicle. There is usually a booklet that is followed and in some cases signed off by a tech when done.

You’re lucky they even checked the fluid! My local dealer wouldn’t even look. They said it’s a closed system and they don’t have any cause to drop the transmission lol.

It seems your dealer actually is trying to help. But the pattern sounds like they want it to fail twice before they discuss possible remedies which is frustrating.

Was talking to a guy on LC Reddit thread with hybrid engine and he had same failure but the 2nd failure didn’t happen til 20k miles. So it’s a waiting game.

Someone on this thread also said their failure was caused by low transmission oil upon delivery and was not checked during PDI. Not sure if it was oversight or just not part of the process.

I'm not sure what's involved in topping/replacing the transmission fluid in the 6th Gen but if dropping the tranny is part of it, that's crazy. Why wouldn't it be a fill/drain plug operation? In my 5th Gen 4Runner and 2.5 Gen Tundra it's that way. No dipstick, drain/fill plug with the standpipe and tighten drain plug at a certain temp.

The Service Manager seemed to suggest TAS is aware of instances where there's low transmission fluid out of the factory. That along with the previous mention in this thread/forum leads me to believe it's a problem, thus would expect Toyota to inspect the fluid level prior to customer delivery. Maybe the people who aren't having issues had dealerships who actually inspected/remedied the fluid level, thus aren't having an issue. While others get the shaft.

I'm hoping the transmission fluid level top-off addresses the issue so that no major repair is needed on a vehicle that's factory assembled and 2 months old. Also, would need this to be documented so that in the event the transmission goes out later, it can be at least partially attributed to this issue.

Alrightttyyy, add me to the list of FAILED transmissions! Last week I took the 4Runner out and drove to work and back no problem. I decided to step out to see some friends and thats when the car started with an insanely loud whirring and whine. I thought it was a one off and drove it, only to find out it would make this noise every time I stopped, braked, or shifted into drive.

Being worried I stopped driving it for the weekend and drove it to the dealership Monday. When they took a look, the senior tech said he had never seen this happen on a 4Runner. I left it with them for the day and they concluded that one of the pumps had failed and had actually started to break.

We are currently waiting on parts to come in, covered under warranty I believe. But we are only at 35,000km (22k miles). I drove this car for almost a year, and for this to happen is wild to me. Usually when my cars crap out, its after 10 years of me and my family driving it, not at less than a year.

I've included some videos of the issue and pictures of the codes that are currently showing, waiting for the car at the end of the week.

I'm curious as to what part/component failed specifically as the tech only said it was a pump.

Picked up my ride today. The repair write up states they looked for signs of metal in the transmission fluid. So I guess it was a drain/fill operation, vice top off. They couldn't reproduce the issue after the fluid inspection. They put 26 miles on it in an attempt to recreate the issue.

Upon pick up, I drove that bish spirited. Just to see how it did. It seems ok. There's still some slight noticeable shifting when creeping around in parking lots.

Toyota: don't make this my last purchase from you!
