Gas tank problem while refueling: nozzle locked, unlocked, spills gas

This has now happened to both me and my wife. We each have a 25 TRD ORP.

While pumping gas, with the gas nozzle locked and inside the tank (not physically holding onto the nozzle), the gas nozzle unlocks and completely pops out of the tank. Gas spills all over the car and on the ground. For me, since I was standing next to it, gas got all over me as well. Has this happened to anyone else?

Sounds like a bad gas pump. If the sensor breaks it wont stop pumping gas, you should report it to the state using the stickers on the machine.

Maybe, but at 2 different pumps? And to clarify, it did stop pumping gas once it fell out but gas still spilled all over the car and ground. The problem was that it popped out of the tank on its own.

Sorry to hear that. That's weird, hasn't happened to me with my ORP so I hope you get it figured out.

Its not happened to me. If O come across a pump that has an aggressive spring and difficult to start, I hold on the the handle till done.

i did experience this a few time in California. Different vehicle, Ford Escape. Different gas stations and brands. Some obviously more likely to jump out than others. I again switched to holding the pump.

I don’t know if CA has weird regulations on the pumps causing this.

Is in it California that has these weird nozzles with a slinky shaped fume seal for environmental concerns? Probably the end of the nozzle doesn’t go deep enough.

That looks familiar to the CA pumps I remember but I escaped two years ago.

Yeah this is in California. I've been driving for decades and have had way too many vehicles, but this has never happened to me before, or my wife. Odd that it's just on this 4runner.

Also, I usually stand right next to the gas tank while it's filling up but I don't normally hold onto it the whole time. But now I feel like I have to hold it the whole time.

On the California pumps with that strong Slinky spring, it happened to me in many different vehicles so its not just the 4runner. I pretty much stand close or hold the pump handle now by default but since leaving CA, the pump handle elsewhere do not seem to have that issue, at least in my local area.

Costco has those type handles with the rubber seal but no issues with it falling out

To be fair to the op, the gas port on the 4Runner is at an odd angle. I felt nervous about leaving the pump unattended. Like it’s too horizontal and the weight of the pump handle can pull it out.

The annoying part for me is that each time I go to fill up and unscrew the cap....it suspiciously feels like it is already loose and doesn't require any tension to unscrew it. Never had that in previous vehicles. Not throwing an EVAP code though but still doesn't feel like it is tight. Weird.
