Hey guys, a couple weeks ago I saw a thread that I can’t find again talking about a strange sound when under light acceleration. Kind of sounds like a cicada bug ticking sound. I figured out last night. Recently bought a Carista evo and when I was going through doing customization I turned off the ESE (Engine Sound Enhancement) and the ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) and it got rid of it. Huge victory because once you notice the sound you can’t un hear it. It would only happen when I was like cruising slow and keeping my acceleration steady like when you’re going down your street and holding 25. Turn it off and thank me later!

you can likely keep ANC on
but I've seen people write that ANC on could cause weird noises on the more advanced JBL sound system but not on standard system

On my SR5 ESE is off, ANC on, and no weird noises. just turbo spool once in a while

it’s not the fuel injector tick that people mention. One thousand percent turning off the ESE got rid of it. you can still hear that tick very very faintly but it was magnified big time with that setting

I don’t know if it was from the exhaust or what. Noticed a rumbling or drone after turning ANC off. I turned it back on. Noise went away

Yeah that’s different. That’s what the noise cancellation does, eliminates steady sounds like a vibration or exhuast drone if ita present. I should have been more clear in my original post that the engine enhancement was the cause of my ticking sound. I just happend to turn both off

Well I must be the odd duck because I cannot hear any kind of sound enhancements at all on my orp.

I run it in eco, normal and Sport and the only difference I hear is when I go into sport mode and it doesn't sound like it's an enhanced sound at all.
It actually sounds like the injectors and tuning program has been altered. Meaning enhanced acceleration and lowered fuel economy.
When I stand outside of the truck in sport mode I actually hear the sound coming out of the exhaust.

So am I missing something here with this sound activation system? Thanks in advance

when ESE is disabled the 4runner sounds like a sewing machine inside the cabin...
quiet*, as it is actually designed. no fake engine sound for the imaginary feels

*yes you may notice injector pulse and mechanical sounds
