Saw the same arguments in the WRX world before this. You have maybe .08% of owners saying they are crucial and a must have. Meanwhile, the hundreds of thousands of other people that don't even know they exist that still have the same high mileage on their vehicles.

I’m not sure what an oil catch can is for. Can someone explain what good it does for the 4Runner specifically?

Cuzza blow by. All engines create it. It gets worse as the engine wears. Blow by happens when part of the combustion process squeaks by the piston rings. That creates a positive pressure inside the crankcase. That pressure has to go somewhere, blow out seals or boom. In days of old they would just vent it into the atmosphere. Heck, some cars just dumped it onto the pavement. Next comes the PCV valve. Positive Crankcase Ventilatio. It regulates crankcase pressure by routing blow by into the intake. It then contaminates the inside of the intake track, throttle body, manifold/plenum, past the intake valves and ultimately burned in the combustion process. Blow by consists of oil, moisture, and fuel. With a catch can, there vapor, which is blow by is collected into a can. The can is plumbed into the PCV system, past a screen or mesh where it essentially condenses and falls into the can. The can requires maintenance. It must be emptied.
