Saw the same arguments in the WRX world before this. You have maybe .08% of owners saying they are crucial and a must have. Meanwhile, the hundreds of thousands of other people that don't even know they exist that still have the same high mileage on their vehicles.

I’m not sure what an oil catch can is for. Can someone explain what good it does for the 4Runner specifically?

Cuzza blow by. All engines create it. It gets worse as the engine wears. Blow by happens when part of the combustion process squeaks by the piston rings. That creates a positive pressure inside the crankcase. That pressure has to go somewhere, blow out seals or boom. In days of old they would just vent it into the atmosphere. Heck, some cars just dumped it onto the pavement. Next comes the PCV valve. Positive Crankcase Ventilation. It regulates crankcase pressure by routing blow by into the intake. It then contaminates the inside of the intake track, throttle body, manifold/plenum, past the intake valves and ultimately burned in the combustion process. Blow by consists of oil, moisture, and fuel. With a catch can, vapor, which is blow by is collected into a can. The can is plumbed into the PCV system, past a screen or mesh where it essentially condenses and falls into the can. The can requires maintenance. It must be emptied.

"Why do I get the impression that this is a solution looking for a problem?"

Probably because you are a skeptical person that needs data proving these 4runners are going to be junk without this device.
Anyone have that data from a reputable source?

The Tacoma has run this engine for around 2 years- I don't see many with unusual exhaust.

Maybe the EPA would love it-mount it beside the engine auto off kill switch.

Whoever wants to keep the truck for a long time, this is really important.
If I'm not mistaken,
the engine has port injection and direct injection, which means
the valves should not get dirty.

I don't see the value in this product. It "solves" an issue the Toyota engineers have already managed/accounted for via DI/PI. Why introduce extra maintenance steps or additional points of failure from more hoses/connections, when there's really no need for it? Sure, the engine uses a turbo, but it's not using boost pressures high enough to necessitate an additional point of failure. Changing your oil more often will likely yield higher system wide returns than spending a bunch of money on a can that might do something, sometime
