This might be a simple question, but is it okay to take my 4Runner on a long drive just a couple of days after picking it up from the dealer? It’s an ORP, and we’re getting it on May 11th in the afternoon. Our trip starts early on the 14th, and it’s about an 8–9 hour drive one way.

Never had 4Runner and Toyota car before :)

Read your break in procedure in your manual.

I would not run it hard for long periods of time, stop at rest areas along the way and just take it easy.
The book from the manufacturer gives you a break in synopsis. Bring a quart of oil to keep it topped off.
Other than that enjoy Yosemite.

don't keep it pinned at one speed and rev.
change speed often and get the revs up and down but not too hard
just don't want to stay in one rev range

the old adage was for the first 1000 miles ...

1. not go over 4k rpm
2. not to tow anything (the old manual said 500 miles)
3. not to stay at any one constant speed (constant speed time frame being more than 30 mins)
4. no hard braking

the new rules (i think from the owners manual) are 500 miles period for all the above

the rules for brakes are two camps, old rules or bed the pads down with hard stops. ymmv

personally, i follow the old rules before they were changed.

I personally think it's a risk taking a new car off the lot and trusting it for a long drive. Generally, things got wrong very early or when the vehicle is old (not including poor maintenance).

I'd rent a vehicle and then test/break-in your new 4R close to home. I'd say after 1000 miles without any issues, you should be good.

I know, I am very paranoid.

I took my '25 ORP Hybrid on a 2500 mile trip last October a month after I bought it. Trip started at 730 miles on the odometer. I changed the oil when I got home at 3333 miles.

I had to drive 6 hours back after picking up my ORP. It had 6 miles on it. I'm not worried.

I drive them like they’re a rental car when they’re new to get the rings seated. I don’t want an oil burner. Just don’t use the cruise control or cruise at a steady rpm until it has a few hundred miles on it.

if you look in the manuel, it says to not do that - but nobody reads the manuel these days

What manual are you referring to. Mine doesn't say that.

Would have been nice if you had included the text from the manual. Here is what my owners manual says (page 190):

Breaking in your new Toyota

To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended:

● For the first 200 miles (300 km):
Avoid sudden stops.

● For the first 500 miles (800 km):
Do not tow a trailer.

● For the first 1000 miles (1600 km):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

That's it.

Same here. Just varied rpms as much as possible and changed oil at 800 miles. Zero issues in the 6k miles since then.

I did a 800 mile road trip at 500 miles or so. I kept my speed 65 (which is only like 2k rpm) or less. I varied me speed here and there for passing and breaks. Ď

Then… I read a thread like this and couldn’t decide if I made a mistake or… it’s a Toyota. What’s done is done. 🤞
