Any way to increase range of key fob?

2025 Trailhunter. There is much to love. However, some quality-of-life issues sour my enthusiasm for such an expensive purchase. The first time I parked it in a huge parking I lost it. The scenario is my grandson's football game (band-geek, not player) and after the game, it's dark. The parking lot is a huge rectangle. No marked rows or sections. No problem, I think. Just use the fob to get an alert. Nothing. Huh! I did the under-the-chin in the direction I'm thinking it is. Nothing. So, I had to resort to trying to recall my walk-in and relied on my inherent male internal spatial direction-finding. I saw it long before the fob would work. My thinking is that, for a $70K+ vehicle, that is pretty terrible. I was thinking it was just mine, but apparently this is common. It could be that Toyota has nerfed the remote to favor arm-twisting and keeping the $15-a-month remote connect subscription, which is coming up soon. This sticks in my craw.

Back when this was coming to light, I could find nothing on increasing the range. I figured if I waited, then surely someone would come up with a solution. So far, I'm not seeing anything other than 3rd party aftermarket solutions. I don't want yet another fob to carry around. I have seen that 2024 and older 4Runners have a little hack, but that doesn't work on 6G. I don't particularly want to have to go outside to stand right next to it to do the remote start. I might as well get in the damn thing.

Anyway, is there any solution, hack, or bodge to increase the fob range to something remotely equivalent to every other vehicle out there? I used to drive a black company vehicle that I could remote start from the building, at least 100 yards away. It was nice because by the time I went down there, it wouldn't be 150° in there.

My tinfoil hat agrees with this. The three-press timing has to be perfect too...Which is some janky shit. Can't do it from inside my house, 10 feet from the thing. Infuriating.

I'll 100% buy an aftermarket remote starter with better FOB in a year or two when they're available for a reasonable cost.

Modern Toyota fobs are so trash lol. The range is awful and the buttons are super hard to actuate. I swapped to the AJT designs fob and the actuation is def better. Range is still trash though. Waiting for better aftermarket options.

the problem with new fobs is the encryption between the fob and the vehicle.

it started happening with the G series fobs way back starting around 2014 and the new "H" series has even more encryption.

that reduces the range by a lot vs the old simple fobs.

you have to pop your fob apart to see the series etched on the circuit board.

I will say my 2021 Tundra SR5 key fob worked from 150' away. My 6th gen 4Runner about 30'. Maybe it is throttled for a reason. I usually refer to the app to remote start from any distance so I can cool/warm down/up the vehicle etc before I get inside.

i ususally park out in the boonies so i dont have this issue. easy to find regardless of where i am at. i just have to remember the door i enter the building to exit from.

good example, went to mall of ga, parked way at the end of the top parking lot at the jcpenny entrance. easy to find as long as i exited the mall from the jcpenny 2nd floor to outside.

and yes i still park out in the boonies when it -20F, people park even crazier when it gets cold up here.

My 2013 Rav4 had crappy range. My garage is maybe 75 feet from my house and to use the factory remote starter I had to open my front door to push the buttons. Even then it took two or three attempts. I think part of it is where the antenna is. I've found parking at different angles helped. So it has nothing to do with selling a service. If you really want more range then install an aftermarket system. A good company can put the antenna/receiver in the optimal location and they usually have more range to begin with.

I've owned over 10 vehicles with key fob start and this 6G is by far the worse I've owned.

I must say, for the last month or two I have had more success with the key fob than I did the first 15 months of ownership. Don't know why, maybe an update?

As far as having to buy a 3rd party product to a basic function you've already paid for seems ridiculous.

I tried mine today from a few hundred feet in the parking lot and it worked fine, at least as good as any other vehicle I can remember. I don't usually use the fob buttons, though.

I put an apple airtag in my car. They're $29. Has saved me on a number of occasions. Not the solution you're looking for but just another nice-to-have thing.

I have been doing this for almost 20 years. Easily doubles the range. I use my chin instead of my head, but yes, same deal.
