After my bad experience and my dealership in which they quoted me $254 and 0-8W Oil (I had it rectified). I will be doing my own oil changes from now on. I am assuming I will need to remove the skid plate to get to the Oil Filter and Drain Plug.

Any pics or recommendations from folks that do their own oil changes?

Insane! Let other folks know what dealer so they avoid them like plague.

Did you get your 2 free Toyota care oil changes already?

I have a TH and i think this applies to TRD pro skid plate : Only 2 bolts need to be fully removed and
the other 2 just loose, because the skid plate design is made to slide/ rotated the be removed once you deal with the bolts as said. 2 holes are keyhole shaped.

I haven't yet done my own oil change yet , but will in the future.

Oil filter is right there super easy access. Someone suggested a flex cone so it doesn't drip oil on the frame during removal.

The rest is the usual.

Dealer was Toyota of Walnut Creek in Northern California. They said it was a computer glitch and then put in the correct oil and charged gave me a 1 time discount below $100. Their sales process was good, paid MSRP, no mark up, but service center.... very concerning.

Yes indeed... well at least they tried to make it right.

Actually i think the TH has 6 bolts and 2 that holt the plate in place for removal. Not sure if TRD plate goes that far back too.

TRD also has 6. Two can simply be loosened but the other 4 need to come out to slide the plate off. It is pretty simple, but helps to jack it up and use stands. The extra room makes it easier.

As other said there are 2 bolts you can loosen and keep the plate in place, remove the other 4 and slide it over/off.
I personally found it faster to remove all 6 and drop the plate and reinstall, that’s just me though.

The kid at work just did his first oil change ever, on his girlfriend’s Kia. He drained the transmission and poured new oil on top of old oil. He called me and said the car wasn’t running right, “Do you have any suggestions“?

The service center in WC is a clown show with bad parking. They should have comped you the oil change for the inconvenience. That said, Autotopia around the corner will do an offline hand wash and wax on a 4Runner for $100. Not bad to clean the car and save yourself several hours.

Purchased at Marin Toyota, live in San Jose. I was told by Toyota Marin provides 3 oil changes and 3 tire rotations. Verified this at Capitol Toyota when I went in for tire rotation and brake TSB. cost $0.00. Did my own 5000k last weekend. Will have dealer do the 10k & 20k.
