If it is truly one thing, then flashlight is my choice. Literally any nighttime emergency situation can be improved with a good flashlight.

Flashlight definitely good to have, but I always have one in my pocket anyway. Not just my phone (can of course be a flashlight) but a tiny 1 or 2 AAA cell flashlight. I use it nearly every day. It is pretty bright and fits in small places, so is very handy.

Very good suggestion, consider a headlamp instead of handheld. I like the Fenix rechargeable versions.
