Hi,

I have posted this question a while back, but there were no resolutions. When my hatch is left open for a period of time, the button will not close the hatch. I have to manually pull down the hatch to close it. It seems like there is a period of time where the electronics disengage the hatch and nothing will signal it to close by a push-up a button.

I know some people will say just close your hatch and you won’t have a problem. I parked in the garage and have little children and sometimes it gets left open. It would be nice to know if there is a way to engage the electronics so I don’t have to pull it down. While I am strong enough, my wife is not tall enough to reach. Basically it is a pain.

I have tried:
-pushing and then holding down the button
-pushing the lock button
-holding down the lock button
-turning the truck on and doing the same
-trying the inside button
-moving the vehicle and pushing the button

Only when the hatch is closed and it resets does it work again.

I am looking for any workarounds.

Thanks.

I sadly think you have your answer, it just isn't the one you want.

Closing manually is probably the only way it will start working again. I checked the manual and it looks like there is a 20 minute timeout on the electronics, like you said, to preserve battery. The manual says you can turn the vehicle on and make sure the hybrid system says, Ready, but it sounds like you have done that and it isn't the case.

One thing you can try if you want because I had the opposite problem on my Subaru Outback. It would leave the power on and drain the battery with the hatch open. Those users got a carabiner and stuck it in the latch mechanism when the hatch was open so the car thought it was closed and it turned off the electronics.

Then you pulled the carabiner out and were able to pop the lock back into the open position and close the door with the button. Worth a shot I suppose.

Thanks. So I’m hearing that I have to continue to muscle it down if I need to get going.
What do you mean no resolution? It was resolved like 3 posts into your thread.

Thanks. It’s a great post explaining why the electronics disengage but I was hoping someone found another way to get the hatch down without pulling it down. And yes, the problem would be solved if I just shut it at night. But that is not my reality with kids.

I noticed my kid left my wife’s Sienna sliding side door open and when I went to close it that it also wouldn’t shut with the button, closed it manually and then it worked again normally with the button again.
I think the person who said thd electronics just time out is correct.

So I take it you’ve already tried the suggestion of trying to find a switch you can just press to make it think the hatch has been shut, maybe reviving the electronics?

Working from home today so I thought I'd so some testing.

Opened the rear hatch and started a timer. 20 minutes on the dot the electronics turned off. Pressed the rear hatch close and it closed right up.

Popped it open again and started a new timer. I'll let it sit an hour this time and see. I also have a carabiner to try out.

This will be interesting. For some reason I feel it times out after a few hours. It has only ever happened at night when there was at least 8 of it sitting open. I don't recall it happening during the day where it might have only been a few hours.
