Why did Toyota mount the oil filter housing in this location?

I attached a picture of the 2026 4Runner's oil filter housing. From what I can see, it's a completely separate housing mounted away from the engine block. It connects through two hoses—one for the oil supply and the other for the return.

This made me wonder: why did Toyota choose this location?

To me, this seems like a missed engineering opportunity. Many manufacturers, including BMW, Jeep, GM, and even Subaru, mount the oil filter on top of the engine. That design makes oil changes much cleaner, faster, and easier since there's less mess and better access.

The 2026 4Runner has a large engine bay, so it seems like Toyota had plenty of room to place the oil filter on top as well. Instead, they mounted it lower and separately, which appears to make servicing more complicated.

Is there an engineering reason for this design, such as cooling, oil pressure, packaging, or crash safety? Or do you think Toyota simply missed an opportunity to make routine maintenance easier?

I'd be interested to hear what others think, especially anyone with an engineering or Toyota service background.

The biggest reason is probably packaging. The 2.4-liter turbo engine has a turbocharger, exhaust plumbing, intake plumbing, emissions equipment, and (on the i-FORCE MAX) hybrid components competing for space on top of the engine. Even though the engine bay is physically large, the top of the engine is actually quite crowded.

Second, the filter is integrated with a water-to-oil heat exchanger (the stacked aluminum cooler beneath the filter). Mounting the filter directly on the cooler creates a compact module with very short internal oil passages. That’s simpler to manufacture and makes it easier to share the same assembly across multiple TNGA-F vehicles like the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Lexus GX, and 4Runner.

I don’t think oil pressure was a major factor. Once the engine is running, the extra few inches of hose or internal passages have essentially no meaningful effect on lubrication performance. Likewise, cooling isn’t improved simply because the filter is mounted remotely—the cooling comes from the heat exchanger itself, not its location.

As for why Toyota didn’t put it on top like BMW, Subaru, or GM have done on some engines, there are tradeoffs there as well. Top-mounted filters are certainly cleaner and more convenient for service, but they require room directly above the engine and can complicate intake, turbo, and emissions packaging. Every manufacturer makes different compromises depending on the engine layout.

Those hoses are the supply and return line for coolant, not oil.

if i remember correctly the turbo center housing is water cooled, rest is oil cooled

there is a video by cc nut on the 4R engine

A couple things to consider:
  • This engine was used in other vehicles before the Taco/4Runner; it could be a packaging issue there, even though there isn't one here. Our engine bay is big, but maybe the Grand Highlander's isn't (prioritizing interior space there), or the Lexus NX (just a small vehicle in general).
  • The stack of plates "under" the base of the filter is an oil cooler. They may not have been able to put that in another place on the block (I guess this is also a packaging consideration).
  • I don't think Toyota's engineers "missed" anything with this (and here I'm speaking as a mechanical engineer myself), but I also don't think it makes maintenance any harder because the drain plug is also *right there*, and you'd have to go to this area and fiddle with that no matter where the filter is.

The filter and the drain plug should have been put at the top. Heck, Toyota should have done their due diligence and create an app that does the oil change
