Who's had their 6th gen for a year now? What do you love/hate?

I’ve had my sixth GEN SR5 for 16 months now. Having another 4runnner in the driveway, which is an older model V6 made me compare the two every day in the beginning.

Coming from a V6 to a turbo 4 was a little tough than the beginning. Lots of engine noise when pressing on the accelerator so I had to switch it to sport mode at all times just to get that powerful feel of a V6.


I had an issue in the first few months that would still persist to this day. Because the engine works harder since is a turbo four I would have this burning smell if I pressed on the gas slightly more then usual. I mean from 0 to 40 mph on a street not racing in normal mode. if I have my rear trunk window down with any of the passenger or driver side windows slightly cracked the burning smell gets into the cabin. This is unfortunate because we all know that this is the only SUV that allows your rear window to roll all the way down.

Since it was the very first vehicle, my local dealership received in February 2025 I was told that this was because the car only had a few thousand miles into wait. I’m now at 14,000 miles in the smoke persists, but I just deal with it. It’s been to the dealer about three times because of this they ran all kinds of test and said the vehicles in normal operating condition.

I then compare the issue to my 2023 SR5 with the Windows down and literally had to press the accelerator to the floor to get the burning smell but under normal driving conditions I couldn’t smell it.

I tried all different types of gas, gas stations, etc.

That’s my only issue with the new vehicle.

Also for someone who is 6 feet tall the plastic that your outer knees sit on isn’t the most comfortable. I bought some aftermarket cushions that stick to the plastic for more comfort.

Dissapointed the Premium doesn't have LED headlights

Love the vehicle overall. It handles well, it's got power, and it looks beautiful.

The con in my opinion is the trunk. It makes creaking noises when opening.

Personally I prefer plastic in many ways over soft surfaces--more durable.

Same, a lot easier to keep clean too when you live somewhere dusty like I do. I could have gotten the GX550 if I wanted, but nicer materials would be a waste with my use.

My list of dislikes is a lot longer than my likes. Main reason why I went to a 4Runner wasn't because it's the best or second best. It was for the resale value.

Exterior:
Exterior isn't bad with the exception of the double mustache front bumper.
Dissapointed the Premium doesn't have LED headlights. The

Interior:
To much black plastic (way to much)
Soft touch elbow rest on the doors and center control aren't soft enough.
No dual zone climate on Premium trims.
button control text/icons are hard to see in low light conditions. they need to have leds.
the silver plastic trim on the steering wheel is tacky. Toyota's leather steering wheels are some of the worst comfort/feel wise for any manufacture they decide to add plastic to it. I don't want to touch cheap plastic on a leather wrapped steering wheel. Get rid of it and keep it all leather.
Seat comfort is so so.
Button icons are twice as big as neccessary on the info system. For a 14" display I can only see 4 of my preset radio stations. Make the icons smaller and you can fit more.
Give us a front locker for offroad trims.

Engine:
4 cyl non hybrid engine sounds whinny.
Needs a v6 options with a little more power.

I miss my Bronco. Suspension felt more solid, but after 4 years it was time to let it go.

I took a good look at the new Bronco Badlands 2 door 7-speed manual transmission, Dana front and rear! This is one crawler and a real heavy duty little beast.

Extremely noisy inside at speed, it rides like a Jeep and sucks feel like it came out of an apocalyptic Mad Max movie.

But really a sweet little truck. If I didn't live in the city I would trash the automatic and go manual with a short wheelbase like the Bronco Badlands 2 door. I love 4Runners but this one really made me take a close look.
